Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

Assignment
The tasks consist of sharing relevant information and making new students feel welcome before they arrive at the Umeå Institute of Design. This is done by keeping in touch with them via email and eventually social media during the summer. The Welcome Officer also "receives" the new students when they arrive in Umeå, meets them at the Institute of Design the week before the start of the semester, and actively participates in the planning and implementation of the welcome activities in connection with the orientation course organized by Umeå University (during August).

The main task is to be available and supportive for the new students by regularly checking and answering questions they ask via email. Examples can be questions about what it is like to be a student at Umeå Institute of Design and how life in Umeå is experienced.  You will also be the contact person for any urgent and important issues that may arise for the new students. In these cases, you can contact designated staff at the Institute of Design to inform them so they can handle these issues further.

Eligibility
You are admitted to undergraduate or advanced level education at the Umeå Institute of Design.

We want you to be a service-minded student who enjoys interacting with others. It is advantageous if you have knowledge of the process when coming to a new country.

Conditions
The Institute of Design will provide basic introduction for you to handle your assignment.

You will be paid based on your level of education, which means between 162-177 SEK/hour (based on Umeå University's guidelines for student compensation).

The work is estimated to total approximately 50 hours during the period July-September. You could manage most of these tasks digitally, but you need to be on-site in Umeå before the autumn semester begins and during the introduction week (week 35-36).

If you have questions, contact Erica Fjällström, HR Coordinator: 072-205 91 16, erica.fjallstrom@umu.se

Application
If you are a student at the Umeå Institute of Design and interested in becoming this year's Welcome Officer, apply digitally in Varbi where you describe why you are interested in the position. The deadline is May 4th. We look forward to your application!
