The Department of Ecology, Environment and Earth Sciences, Umeå University is looking for one to two field assistants to work with characterizing stream channels at selected sites in Sweden. The employment is part-time, within the framework of the intermittent employment agreement. Start date is June 24, 2024 or by agreement and the tasks continue until the end of September. The position can be divided between several people and the  start date can potentially be later in the summer and the end date can potentially be earlier than the end of September. The deadline for applications is May 10th, 2024. Welcome with your application!

Project description
The EU Water Framework Directive has tasked member states with achieving “good” chemical and ecological status for water bodies in catchments.  This can be achieved by employing process-based methods to monitor and manage rivers. In Sweden, geomorphic characterisation and classification of channels serves as a basis to meet water management objectives. Within this project, financed by the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (HaV), we aim to collect data on the stream channel types that occur in various regions in the country. The duration of the field work component is twelve (12) weeks where rigorous assessment of channel segments will occur.

Job duties
The field assistant will participate in characterizing channel segments, conducting measurements and handling equipment. The work includes physically demanding work outdoors.

The tasks include:

  • Review and packing of equipment prior to field visit,
  • Visual assessment and measurements of channel metrics,
  • Writing detailed field notes and data recording
  • Processing collected data and documentation into our data storage network.

Qualifications
We are looking for you with a university education in ecology, geoscience or equivalent. You have good experience of working in demanding environments that are typical of the Swedish mountains, forests and other natural environments. You have good knowledge of Microsoft Office and good ability to express yourself orally and in writing in English. A driver's license (B) is a requirement for this position. Other requirements are to be able to navigate with a map and compass/GPS. Experience with field work in rivers is a merit.

Intermittent employment
An intermittent employment means that you can be offered scheduled employment occasions during a frame period of 12 months max. The employment occasions are time limited in accordance with LAS 5§ 1p. To be available this way means that you can accept or decline each employment occasion that you are offered and that a new employment enters each time you work.

For this employment, we offer a framework agreement of 3 months.
