The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden, MIMS, is the Swedish node for the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine. Our mission is to promote research excellence in infection medicine and to foster the careers of the next generation of researchers in this field. Through our partnership with the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and a strong network of Nordic partners, we connect Swedish science to an expanding family of European research centres for molecular medicine.

We are looking for a research coordinator in the role as science manager for a permanent and full-time employment with a starting date as soon as possible or by agreement. Probationary period may be applied. The position is located at the Department of Molecular Biology, Umeå University. 

Job description

As science manager, you will provide strategic and operational management to MIMS. The science manager will work closely with the MIMS director and deputy director in setting and implementing the overall scientific strategy. You will manage external scientific partnerships and oversee internal projects. You will create an environment conducive to new research ideas and collaborations by planning and executing events and workshops for our scientists and their growing network of national and international partners. In these activities, you will be supported by a project coordinator, event coordinator and communications officer. You will guide the MIMS management team and ensure good communication with the institution's finances and HR function.

You will be responsible for the coordination of the institute´s Executive and Scientific Advisory Boards and you will oversee communication of our research internally and externally.

You will support and implement research initiatives, including a joint postdoctoral programme of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, drive fund raising and manage external reviews and refunding process. You will use your scientific and administrative knowledge to provide a first point of contact for scientific and administrative partners across our network. 

Qualifications

  • A Doctors degree in a relevant field is required.
  • At least three years of experience in science management (e.g. project coordination, communication, recruitment), of which experience in scientific management within international relations is a particularly significant requirement.
  • To promote cooperation effectively, you will need to be able to communicate with stakeholders, our scientists and research-support staff on equal terms. Thus, you will need a thorough understanding of decision-making processes of stakeholders, the work processes in research but also of related administrative matters.
  • Strong record of success in your own research career (documented by e.g. peer-review publications) and/or in research management (e.g. contributions in implementation of collaborative projects).
  • Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English
  • Ability to guide a team and delegate tasks to ensure highest work efficiency in a good work environment. Considering the nature of tasks, you should be a person with strong leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills who sees strategically the overall picture. 
  • You enjoy working as part of a team but also independently. 
  • As a person, you are open-minded, creative, social, flexible, initiative-taking and assertive.

Other desirable qualifications

  • Knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written.
  • Knowledge of the European and Swedish life science community.
  • Some experience in experimental research and a scientific background close to the activities of MIMS is an advantage.
