Umeå University, Faculty of Medicine

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

The Department of community medicine and rehabilitation comprises six units; Occupational therapy, Physiotherapy, Geriatrics, Sports medicine, Rehabilitation medicine and Forensic medicine, all involved in teaching, research and collaboration with society and health care.

The position is full-time for two years.

The project

Our multi-professional research group at the Department of Community Medicine and Rehabilitation; Physiotherapy, studies human movement control particularly in persons with movement deficits following trauma or disease. The current research project addresses the consequences of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Based on specific research questions, we aim to assess how knee function and movement ability are affected and how this and psychological aspects, such as fear of secondary injury, affect the individual We also develop and evaluate assessment methods for these aspects based on, e.g., three-dimensional  movement analysis, brain imaging techniques, clinical tests and questionnaires.

Your work assignments

The position involves testing and measurements of movement control in people who have suffered ACL injury, and also of knee-healthy control persons including elite athletes. The focus is on motion analysis with laboratory-based methodology with three-dimensional kinematics, kinetics and electromyography recording of muscle activity, as well as parallel monitoring of brain activity with electroencephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging. The tasks include data collection, analysis and interpretation as well as writing of scientific publications in collaboration with the research group.

Qualifications

Applicants should have completed a PhD (within the previous 3 years) in a research field highly related to the understanding of human movement control and dysfunctions. Documented experience regarding biomechanics and assessment of movement ability in healthy persons and people with movement disorders is required. The applicant should have knowledge of techniques for human movement measurements and analysis, statistical analysis (doctoral level), as well as knowledge about relevant anatomy and physiology. Experience of advanced laboratory-based movement analysis methodologies such as 3D motion capture, kinetics, isokinetic registration, electromyography techniques, and use of software such as Visual 3D, MATLAB or similar is required. Further, the applicant should have education and experience of brain imaging techniques. Experience of parallel recording of human movements and brain activation data is merited. Publications in peer-reviewed journals, experience of grant writing and planning scientific studies are required. From the successful candidate, we expect a capability of autonomous scientific research work, good social interaction and skills in presenting and writing scientific publications in English.

Applicants should submit:

  • A Curriculum Vitae
  • A short description of your research interests, why you are interested in the position and how you may contribute to the research
  • Copies of degree certificates
  • A summary of previous research achievements and qualifications of special interest for the present position (max 3 pages)
  • A publication list
  • Copies of relevant articles (max 5 papers)
  • ·A list of 3 referees including positions and contact details
