Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics (USBE) is looking for a professor of Economics with a focus on Sustainable Development. The position includes research, teaching and outreach activities in the field of economics. A fully funded doctoral student is included with the position.

Work tasks

A professor of Economics with a focus on Sustainable Development is expected to engage in research related to one or more of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set up by the United Nations (https://sdgs.un.org/goals). The work of a successful candidate contributes to one or several fields in micro- or macroeconomics, such as environmental and resource economics, health economics, industrial organization, labor economics, public economics or regional economics.

The responsibilities include contributing to the continuous improvement of the research and teaching environment, as well as curriculum development at USBE, especially within the field of economics. This is achieved through own research, active participation in the research community and through teaching and supervision. Moreover, as a full professor, you are expected to develop and strengthen strategic partnerships within USBE that will benefit research and education. This involves building upon, and developing further, the local, national and international research projects that are conducted at USBE. It also involves interacting with scholars within and outside Umeå University, as well as interacting with practitioners from the private and public sector.

The position includes initiating, conducting and communicating research, publishing in leading academic journals, planning for research projects and actively working with applications for external research financing. The place of work is the campus in Umeå and the appointment as a professor requires active and regular engagement in USBE activities.

The professor has the possibility to affiliate her/himself to the Centre for Environmental and Resource Economics (CERE) which is a collaboration between Umeå University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).

Eligibility

To be eligible for the position as full professor, the candidate must have shown academic and teaching skills according to Chapter 4, Section 3 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointments Procedure for teachers at Umeå University. 

Assessment Criteria

The most important assessment criterion is scientific skills. Other assessment criteria comprise pedagogical skills, administrative skills, as well as cooperation and cooperative skills.

The degree of scientific skills is the main assessment criterion for the appointment. Scientific skills are demonstrated through independent research at a high international level, the ability to plan and manage scientific activities, documented national and international research cooperation, publications in peer reviewed journals and the ability to communicate research both within the scientific community and to the wider society. Scientific skills are also demonstrated by a documented ability to attract external research funding as a main or co-applicant, and by a documented ability to successfully supervise PhD students as main or co-supervisor. The candidate should have an excellent record of conducting research and publishing in high quality journals within the field of economics with a focus on sustainable development.

Pedagogical skills refer to teaching and learning, to one´s own development of teaching skills, contributing to the pedagogical development of the organization and to the revision or development of the curriculum. Pedagogical skills also include participation in third-cycle activities, such as doctoral student supervision and participation in the planning and delivery of courses and seminars for doctoral students.

Administrative skills include the ability to develop and lead an organization, a research center or a committee. This may include assignments as a coordinator for a program, a unit or a research program. Collaboration with the surrounding society, for example through assignments or dissemination of research outside the research community with policy impact, is also valued. 

Collaboration and cooperative skills include a demonstrated ability to cooperate with external agents, as well as the competence to formulate, plan and contribute to projects involving several members, and other joint activities in cooperation or at the workplace. The candidate shall be able to work independently, be structured and thorough, and be able to prioritize among different tasks. The ability to create good relations with others, contribute to a good working environment and to have a service-oriented and problem-solving approach, are also valuable attributes.

Weighting of assessment criteria 

When assessing an application, scientific skills are assigned the greatest importance. Great importance is given to pedagogical skills, administrative skills and good collaboration and cooperative skills.

In the assessment of scientific skills, great importance shall be given to the research output related to sustainable development during the last five-year period (after accounting for leave of absence and parental leave) and the ability to obtain research funding in competition with other researchers.

In the assessment of pedagogical skills, great importance shall be given to supervision of doctoral students and teaching at the advanced level. 

In the assessment of administrative skills, great importance shall be given to experience from commissions of trust within the academic sector, business community or public sector such as boards, research councils or review teams.

When assessing collaborative skills, a particular focus shall be given to the capacity to initiate projects and activities with external and internal stakeholders.

Special attention will be placed on the candidate´s ability to conduct pedagogical and administrative tasks that require a good understanding and use of the English language.

The Department of Economics has around 35 employees and teaches about 1 100 students per year. The department´s strong research areas are in the fields of environmental and resource economics, and public economics. Other active research areas are behavioral economics, education economics, health economics, labor economics, industrial organization and welfare economics.
