The Department of Ecology and Environmental Science, Umeå university, are looking for 7-8 Field Assistants for a project in old-growth forests. The employment is an intermittent employment, an hourly employment, read more below. Expected start date is May 2, 2023 or according to agreement. The deadline for applications is March 27th, 2023. Project description
The project is looking to increase the knowledge of carbon sequestration and storage in Sweden’s old-growth forests. During the summer of 2023 we will visit ~12 forests across Sweden, from north to south.

Work tasks and practical information
In each forest we will measure carbon stocks and fluxes from soil, mycorrhiza, roots, understory vegetation and tree. Techniques and instruments include CO2-measurements with an IRGA (Infrared gas analyser), tree coring, soil sampling and installation of sensors and other equipment.

The working day length will vary due to the conditions/circumstances. Accommodation will vary, we will stay in tents close to our sites, or in hostels nearby.

Qualifications
We are searching for you with higher education with a focus on natural science or equivalent. You have documented experience of field work in various conditions, hiking in difficult terrain and camping in tent. Documented experience in forest inventory, soil sampling, using CO2 gas exchange analysers or coring trees is also a demand. The work requires people who is thorough, independent and flexible. You who should also have a good ability to work in a group and a problem-solving attitude. B driving license and fluency in English are also required for this employment.

Intermittent employment
An intermittent employment means that you can be offered scheduled employment occasions during a frame period of 9 months max. The employment occasions are time limited in accordance with LAS 5§ 1p. To be available this way means that you can accept or decline each employment occasion that you are offered and that a new employment enters each time you work. This practically means that you have an hourly employment.

The preliminary work period for these intermittent employments is 2023-06-26 – 2023-08-10, but with a frame contract on 9 months, for us to be able to offer work after the work period, if there is need for that.
