Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37 000 students and about 4 700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. And the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.
The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is what it is all about. But also about delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. This is simply where the future is built.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.
A fully funded, two-year postdoc position is immediately available in the Department of Clinical Microbiology at Umeå University. The position is open to scientists with an interest in immune responses to microbial infections, recombinant antigen design or similar area.
Description of the project
The postdoctoral researcher will be involved in our ongoing efforts to improve the understanding of the human adaptive immune response to infection and the protective effect of vaccination. We do this by cellular, molecular, and genetic characterization of cells and tissues from rationally selected patient groups. Depending on the interest and background of the successful candidate, the specific focus will be on (1) the genetics of B cell repertoire development through life, (2) the role of complement regulatory proteins for initiation of adaptive immunity in lymphoid organs or, (3) the impact of age on the cellular and genetic response to infection and vaccination. Further information of the research team, strategies and projects can be found at

Work responsibilities
The successful candidate is expected to lead the development and establishment of new methodology for immunological analysis of immune cells, tissues, and capillary blood samples, and to apply this on unique patient material. The goal is to address research questions that focus on improvement of our basic or applied understanding of adaptive immune responses. Of particular interest is establishment of methodology that will allow us to dissect general or antigen specific B repertoires from small sample volumes on a molecular and genetic level. The projects are pursued in an interdisciplinary environment that involves interaction with clinical and pre-clinical partners as well as international collaborations. Fluency in English is mandatory.
Eligibility
A person who has been awarded a doctorate or a foreign qualification deemed to be the equivalent of a doctorate[ME1] [LR2] in immunology, vaccinology, virology, or related fields is eligible for appointment as postdoctoral researcher. Candidates from other fields with strong skills in antigen design, single cell sequencing and/or multiplex platforms are also encouraged to apply. The eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time at which the appointment decision is made.
Fluency in English is mandatory, and the candidate must be able to work independently and have good skills in scientific quantitative methods in the research area we are asking for. The applicant is required to be experienced with hands-on work at the laboratory.
Additional useful qualifications
Since appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is a career-development position for junior researchers, we are primarily interested in applicants who completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, an applicant who has completed their degree earlier than that may be considered. Special reasons include absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical practice, appointments of trust for a trade union organisation or other similar circumstances, and for relevant duties/assignments within the subject area.
The following experiences or skills may be advantageous for the position; experience with research on adaptive immune responses, technologies for detection of multiple protein analytes in small volume samples, experience with multiparameter flow cytometry and data analysis, dissection of human immune responses on a cellular, molecular and/or genetic level.
More information about the position
The appointment is a full-time, fixed-term position for two years in accordance with the terms of contract for fixed-term employment as a postdoctoral researcher from 1 February 2022.
Application
The application must include:
The application must be written in Swedish or English. The application must be made via our e-recruitment system Varbi and must be received latest 02 April 2023.
