Umeå School of Architecture, Umeå University, is pleased to invite applications for the position of Professor in Architecture. Duties

As Professor in Architecture, your main responsibilities include research and teaching in the field of architecture. When chosen for the position, we would work with you to determine the direction of the teaching and research in line with your subject expertise and departmental needs. The research time amounts to 75% of full-time for the first five years of employment. Thereafter, the distribution between research, teaching and other assignments may vary.

You will hold an important role and with great freedom focus on the development of your research subject area at the department and within the university in research and education at the undergraduate, advanced and postgraduate level. To help facilitate this, you are expected to develop and maintain collaborations across departmental and disciplinary borders, both within and outside the university.

The position includes teaching and coaching of students at all education levels. As part of the role, you are also expected to inform stakeholders within and outside Umeå University about relevant research and development work, and plan and lead research projects (including applications for research funding). Assignments of administrative nature, including management assignments at departmental and other levels within Umeå University, may also occur.

Eligibility requirements

A person who has demonstrated both research and educational expertise shall be qualified for appointment as a Professor. (Chapter 4, Section 3, Higher Education Ordinance). Research expertise refers to independent research work, the ability to plan and lead research activities and the ability to impart information about research to the outside world. Educational expertise refers to documented experience of planning, implementation, examination, and evaluation of teaching and is shown in a reflective approach to student learning and one’s own teaching role.

A high level of English proficiency, both in speaking and writing, is a requirement.

Assessment criteria and their weight

The assessment criteria for appointment as a professor shall be the degree of the expertise required as a qualification for employment. As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise.

In determining suitability for the role, the degree of scientific expertise will primarily form the basis for assessment.  Secondly, significant emphasis will be placed on the degree of pedagogical skill. In addition, leadership skills, administrative skills, and ability to collaborate with the surrounding society and other skills of relevance to the position will be taken into consideration.

Scientific expertise

Scientific expertise shall be demonstrated through independent scientific productivity.

The criteria for assessment are:

  • breadth and depth of research – quality and scope
  • originality of research
  • productivity
  • contributions to the international research community
  • assignments within the research community
  • the ability to competitively obtain external research funding
  • collaboration with the surrounding society

Scientific expertise shall refer to sub-areas of architecture. Documented experience of applying this expertise in at least two areas of application is considered a merit. The ability to competitively obtain research funding is important for the role.

The degree of scientific skill will be assessed based on published scientific work, published in internationally distributed scientific journals and conferences that apply peer reviews, or alternatively other forms of publication channels, publications and presentations linked to the subject area that can be used in a review to assess the degree of scientific skill. The research efforts' topicality, quality and originality will be assessed.

Pedagogical expertise

The pedagogical expertise for employment as professor should be demonstrated by documented experience of teaching with scientific foundation at university level.

The criteria for evaluation are:

  • an ability to plan, implement and evaluate teaching and an ability to supervise and examine students at every level of education
  • an ability to vary teaching methods and examination formats in relation to anticipated study results and the nature of the subject
  • experience of collaboration with the surrounding society in planning and implementation of education
  • participation in the development of learning environments, teaching aids and study resources
  • a reflective approach to student learning and one’s own role as a teacher

Pedagogical expertise shall primarily include the field of architecture. Pedagogical expertise is demonstrated through documented experience of teaching at both undergraduate and advanced level and postgraduate level, as well as documented experience of supervision of thesis projects, supervision of doctoral students and pedagogical development work.

Pedagogical expertise can be attained through education in university pedagogy, other education of relevance for teaching at a university level or documented and proven experience teaching at the university level.

Further qualifications

A general basis for assessment for all teaching categories is both good cooperative skills and the expertise and suitability in general required to complete the work duties satisfactorily.

The ability to collaborate with the surrounding community will be assessed based on the applicant's experience of collaboration with the business community and with researchers and actors from other scientific fields.

Administrative skills, as well as the ability to develop and lead activities and staff at the university refer to documented ability to organize research within architecture, as well as the ability to organize education at undergraduate, advanced and postgraduate level.

Great emphasis is placed on personal suitability and the ability to constructively communicate with actors within and outside Umeå University.
