Umeå University, Faculty of Medicine

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

Surgical and Perioperative Science is looking for a postdoctoral fellow for analyses of circulating tumour cells at the single-cell level. The position is located in the "Translational Research Centre" in building 6M at Umeå University/Umeå hospital. The position is full-time for two years starting on January 1st 2023 or as agreed. Apply by November 30 at the latest.

Description of the project

Our research group works interdisciplinary from preclinical to clinical studies, "bench-to-bedside", within the Wallenberg Center for Molecular Medicine (WCMM). Our goal is to find good biomarkers for individualized treatment through characterization of cells from tissue and blood. And find treatable mechanisms for metastatic prostate cancer.

By isolating circulating tumour cells (CTC), immune cells, exosomes and cell-free DNA from the blood, we study metastasis in prostate cancer. By characterizing CTCs with RNA and DNA sequencing at the single cell level, we want to identify the CTC heterogeneity in patients with metastatic disease and study early treatment response.

Work responsibilities

Your role will be to set up methods and be responsible for sequencing analyses of patient material from men with prostate cancer. You must be able to work independently and have documented solid experience in experimental research.

Competence

Eligible to be employed as a postdoctoral fellow is someone who has completed a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree, in the subject of biomedical research, biochemistry, molecular biology, or biomedicine. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time at which the employment decision is made.

We are looking for a driven and highly motivated person who has good experience with RNA and DNA sequencing. You should have good knowledge in sequencing techniques such as 10X single cell sequencing, Riboseq, and bioinformatics. You must be able to work independently and have documented solid experience in flow cytometry, sequencing and subsequent data analyses. You must also have experience in laboratory work, be able to summarize and present results at scientific meetings and write scientific publications. A very good knowledge in written and spoken English is required. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Additional qualifications

Since appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is a career-development position for junior researchers, we are primarily interested in applicants who completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, an applicant who has completed their degree earlier than that may be considered. Special reasons include absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical practice, appointments of trust for a trade union organisation or other similar circumstances, and for relevant duties/assignments within the subject area.

In your work, you should have a focus on high quality and a good ability to solve problems. You should have a good ability to take initiative and collaborate and be flexible to changes within the project.

More information about the position

The appointment is a full-time, fixed-term position for two years in accordance with the terms of contract for fixed-term employment as a postdoctoral researcher from 1 February 2022.
