Umeå University, Medicinska fakulteten

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 12 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

The Department of Molecular Biology seeks a postdoctoral researcher to the project “Diet, gut microbiota and mucus function”. The position is full-time for two years with a desirable begin June 1st 2022 or as agreed.

Description of the project

With the aim to develop novel strategies to strengthen the mucosal barrier, this research project aims to test how specific food components affect gut microbiota composition and intestinal mucus function. The project will be carried out in the Schröder lab in collaboration with an industry partner. The position will include a combination of in vivo experiments, gut microbiota modulations, bioinformatic analyses as well as state-of-the-art mucus measurements and imaging techniques.

Work responsibilities

The specific work responsibilities of of the postdoctoral researcher include:

  • Test how specific dietary supplements affect mucus penetrability in alive tissue.
  • Test how specific dietary supplements affect mucus growth rate in alive tissue.
  • Collect and analyse tissue and stool samples from in vivo experiments.

The selected candidate will use a combination of animal and in vitro studies to reach these aims. Work tasks also include designing, performing and documenting experiments, presenting research results at conferences, and writing publications under supervision by the group leader.

Eligibility

A person who has been awarded a doctorate or a foreign qualification deemed to be the equivalent of a doctorate in Biochemistry is eligible for appointment as postdoctoral researcher. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time at which the appointment decision is made.

The ideal candidate must have practical experience with ex vivo mucus function analyses as well as gut microbiota research, including anaerobic culturing techniques (e.g. anaerobic chamber, bioreactor). Furthermore, experience in bioinformatics (whole genome sequencing and/or 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing) and experience with animal models are required. Furthermore, the fellow needs to be organized, highly motivated and be able to work productively in a team as well as independently. Fluent oral and written communication in English is essential for this project.

Additional useful qualifications

Since appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is a career-development position for junior researchers, we are primarily interested in applicants who completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, an applicant who has completed their degree earlier than that may be considered. Special reasons include absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical practice, appointments of trust for a trade union organisation or other similar circumstances, and for relevant duties/assignments within the subject area.

The postdoctoral researcher must demonstrate scientific productivity through publications in internationally peer-reviewed journals. Previous experience in the fields of host-microbe interaction, working with industry partners and/or colonization of microbiota-depleted mice are strong merits. The fellow should be willing to take initiatives and have international working experience. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
