Umeå universitet, Medicinska fakulteten

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

Description

We are looking for a Ph.D. student in medical science with a focus on biomedical laboratory science to the Department of Clinical Microbiology. The research area concerns amyloid diseases with a focus on the amyloid compositions associated with Alzheimer's disease, type 2 diabetes, and familial amyloidosis. The projects are specifically focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms that cause amyloid formation as well as the effect of the endogenous proteins that are currently known to counteract these processes. You will use various forms of chromatographic methods for protein purification, transmission electron microscopy, thioflavin-based fluorescence techniques as well as various immunological methods of analysis.

The projects also include studies in eukaryotic cell systems. Amyloids have general properties, and these structures are also found in other areas of nature. The projects will therefore also include studies of bacterial amyloids in the form of biofilms.

We offer an international, stimulating, and collaborative research environment where your scientific career development is promoted. The employment is limited to the equivalent of four years full-time or up to five years, of which teaching or other departmental work can amount to a maximum of 20%.

If you are admitted to doctoral education from.m. 2021-07-01, you will be part of the faculty-wide doctoral education program at the Faculty of Medicine. The program comprises 25 ECTS credits and is offered in two study rates: 25 ECTS over 8 semesters (4 years in total) and over 12 semesters (6 years in total), starting each autumn and spring semester. More information about the program can be found on the faculty's website for doctoral education:
