Work description

The employment mainly involves teaching at the Department of Chemistry’s courses in Chemometrics and Experimental design & Multivariate data analysis. The tasks also include course coordination, responsibility for examination and evaluation. Furthermore, development of a new course in Multivariate analysis to be part of the department’s PhD education program is included.

Eligibility requirements

According to Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance, a person is to qualify for appointment as Associate Professor if he or she within an area has demonstrated educational expertise and holds a doctorate or has attained equivalent academic competence or other professional skills relevant with regards to the subject area of the appointment.

The subject area for the doctoral degree should be chemistry, computational science or equivalent scientific competence.

Documented experience of teaching within chemometrics (multivariate data analysis and experimental design) is a requirement.

Documented experience of teaching at basic and advanced level as well as supervision at doctoral level are further requirements.

The requirements also include good knowledge in programming in Matlab or similar programming language as well as experience of method development regarding chemometric methods.

Assessment criteria

In the selection of candidates, equal emphasis should be put on the degree of scientific expertise and pedagogical skills. In addition, regard shall be given to administrative skills, skills to develop and lead organizations and personnel in academia as well as the ability to cooperate with the surrounding society and informing about research and development work.   

Scientific expertise

Scientific expertise shall be demonstrated through independent scientific productivity. The criteria for assessment are:

  • breadth and depth of research – quality and scope
  • originality of research
  • productivity contributions to the international research community
  • assignments within the research community
  • the ability to competitively obtain external research funding
  • collaboration with the surrounding society

Pedagogical expertise

The pedagogical expertise for employment as professor should be demonstrated by documented experience of teaching with scientific foundation at university level. The criteria for evaluation are:

  • an ability to plan, implement and evaluate teaching and an ability to supervise and examine students at every level of education
  • an ability to vary teaching methods and examination formats in relation to anticipated study results and the nature of the subject
  • experience of collaboration with the surrounding society in planning and implementation of education
  • participation in the development of learning environments, teaching aids and study resources
  • a reflective approach to student learning and one’s own role as a teacher

Pedagogical expertise can be attained through education in university pedagogy, other education of relevance for teaching at a university level or documented and proven experience teaching at the university level.

Pedagogical skills must refer to the subject area of chemometrics. Higher pedagogical education is a merit.

Further qualifications

Administrative skills and the ability to develop and lead activities and staff at the university shall relate to the ability to organize education at the undergraduate level, and documented ability for independent work as well as work in teaching teams.

The employment is a general fixed-term employment for 24 months with a scope of 20% of a full-time employment.
