Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

At the Department of Physics, strong and expanding research is conducted in several different research subjects, e.g. organic electronics, nanotechnology, photonics, space physics and theoretical physics. The department is part of the Chemical Biological Centre at Umeå University. We have a strong focus on interdisciplinary research and excellent access to modern instrumentation and infrastructure for analysis.

Department of Physics at Umeå University (https://www.umu.se/en/department-of-physics/) conducts strong research in the areas of organic electronics, condensed matter physics, nanotechnology, photonics, space physics, and theoretical physics. The Relativistic Attosecond Physics Laboratory (REAL, www.realumu.org), at the Department of Physics, Umeå University is looking for a Senior research engineer in experimental physics for a project aimed at “Attosecond XUV pump – XUV probe spectroscopy”.

The position is a two-year full-time employment. Application deadline is April 30, 2021. The position will open June 1, 2021 (exact start date can be negotiated).

Project Description
You will work on the nonlinear attosecond physics project to time-resolve inner-shell electron dynamics with intense attosecond pulses. The project utilizes the sub-5 fs Light Wave Synthesizer optical parametric synthesizer [1] with its recent CEP-stabilized 100 TW upgrade, and a fully developed 24m-long gas harmonic beam line for intense attosecond pulse generation [2], and electron and ion detectors to trace the nonlinear processes [3]. Furthermore, involvement in the laser operation is also expected and in other related projects like relativistic HHG [4] is possible.

Competence requirements
To be admitted for the announced Senior research engineer position you are required to have a PhD degree in physics or engineering and have several years of postdoc experience or equivalent. Furthermore, experimental know-how is necessary in 1.) attosecond physics / high-harmonic generation (in gas or solid or plasma medium) and 2.) construction/operation and application of few optical-cycle light sources (laser with post-compression or OPA or OPCPA). Experience with simulations and theory in the former two fields, with experimental laboratory research, including electronics, plasma physics, and supervision of Bachelor, Master and PhD students will be seen as an advantage. You must be highly motivated and have the ability to work independently as well as a part of the research group. The applicant is required to be fluent in both oral and written English.

Application
The application should include:

  1. A cover letter with a brief description of motivation, qualifications and research experience in high-harmonic generation and few-cycle light pulse generation. (1-2 pages)
  2. Curriculum vitae (CV).
  3. Verified copies of relevant degree certificate(s) translated into English or Swedish.
  4. A list of publications.
  5. A copy of three relevant publications.
