The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the project The effects of unemployment on health of family members (HEALFAM) financed by the European Research Council (ERC) and led by associate professor Anna Baranowska-Rataj.

The Department of Sociology hosts undergraduate and postgraduate programs. We presently have 55 employees, including 12 PhD students and 6 postdocs. Research within the department covers a variety of areas, where one of the prominent fields is research on social stratification, family and wellbeing.

The purpose of HEALFAM project is to examine how losing a job affects health outcomes of partners, children and elderly parents of the unemployed and whether the magnitudes of these influences differ across families and societies. Our project team assesses the consequences of unemployment for family members taking a multi-actor perspective and international comparative approach. The postdoctoral researcher will be involved specifically in the component of HEALFAM project, which investigates the impact of adult children’s unemployment on health outcomes of parents using data from Swedish registers available at the Center of Ageing and Demographic Research (CEDAR) and Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) data.

Duties of the postdoctoral research fellow will include responsibility for planning and carrying out research in collaboration with HEALFAM team members, participation at meetings and seminars at the Department of Sociology and CEDAR, as well as presenting papers at international conferences and workshops. Both the Department of Sociology and CEDAR support and encourage young scholars in developing an own research agenda and obtaining external research funding.

To be qualified for the position, the candidate must have received a doctoral degree in sociology or other related field (including demography, economics, epidemiology or human geography) 3 years ago the latest. Parental leave, sick leave, military service etc. may push this date back. The applicant should not previously have held a postdoc position in the same or related subject area at Umeå University.

The main assessment criteria for the appointment are documented research skills. Applicants must have experience in analysing quantitative longitudinal data and have confidence in giving academic presentations in English. Previous experience in research on intergenerational relations, especially with use of Swedish register data, will be considered as advantage. Experiences of working in an interdisciplinary environment would be desirable.
