Umeå School of Architecture, Umeå University, employs a professor in the field of architecture and innovative methods in building technology with focus on wood technology. Duties

The tasks include research and teaching in the field of architecture and innovative methods in building technology with focus on wood technology. The primary focus of the research is architecture with a focus on wood technology. In other words, how architecture, especially today's innovative wood technology, can have an influence on the process towards a sustainable environment. The research period amounts to 75% of full-time employment for the first five years of the employment. Thereafter, the distribution between research, teaching and other assignments may vary.

The professor will have an important role with great freedom in the work of developing ones subject area at the department and at the university, in research, education at undergraduate level, advanced level and postgraduate level. The professor is expected to develop collaborations across departmental boundaries and other boundaries, both within and outside the university.

The employment includes teaching and tutoring at all levels. The duties include providing information about research and development work, and to plan and lead research projects (including applications for research funding). Assignments of administrative nature, incl. management assignments at departmental and other levels within Umeå University, may also occur. Place of employment is Umeå.

Eligibility requirements

A person who has demonstrated both research and educational expertise shall be qualified for appointment as a Professor (Chapter 4, Section 3, Higher Education Ordinance).

Research expertise refers to independent research work, the ability to plan and lead research activities and the ability to impart information about research to the outside world. Educational expertise refers to documented experience of planning, implementation, examination and evaluation of teaching and is shown in a reflective approach to student learning and one’s own teacher role.

A high level of knowledge in English, both in speech and writing, is a requirement.

Assessment criteria and their weight

The degree of scientific skill shall primarily apply as an assessment basis for employment. Secondly, significant emphasis will be placed on the degree of pedagogical skill. In addition, leadership skills, administrative skills, collaboration with the surrounding society and other skills of significance, with regard to the employment's subject area and the duties to be included in the employment will be taken into account.

Scientific expertise

Scientific expertise shall be demonstrated through independent scientific productivity. The criteria for assessment are:

  • Ability to independently conduct research of high international quality
  • Ability to plan, establish and lead research and research projects
  • Ability to develop new methods and to apply them to new problems
  • Ability to collaborate nationally and internationally with other researchers / research groups
  • Ability to initiate interdisciplinary collaborations

A doctoral degree in an area relevant to the employment is a strong merit.

Scientific expertise must refer to basic sub-areas of architecture with a focus on wood technology. Documented experience of applying this expertise in at least two application areas is a merit. The ability to competitively obtain research funding is important.

The degree of scientific skill will be assessed on the basis of published scientific work, published in internationally distributed scientific journals and conferences that apply peer reviews, or alternatively other forms of publication channels, publications and presentations linked to the subject area that can be used in a review to assess the degree of scientific skill. The research efforts timeliness, quality and originality will be assessed.

Pedagogical expertise

The pedagogical expertise for employment as professor should be demonstrated by documented experience of teaching with scientific foundation at university level. The criteria for evaluation are:

  • Ability to plan, implement and evaluate teaching as well as ability to supervise and examine students at all levels of education
  • Ability to vary teaching methods and examination methods in relation to expected study results and the nature of the subject
  • Experiences of collaboration with the surrounding community in the planning and implementation of education
  • Participation in the development of learning environments, teaching aids and study resources
  • A reflective approach to students' learning and their own teaching role
  • Broad, solid and current knowledge in the subject area
  • Ability to convey commitment and interest in the subject, and to communicate with and motivate students
  • Ability to teach and supervise at doctoral level

These skills can be obtained through higher education teacher training , other training relevant to teaching within higher education and / or documented, proven experience of teaching in higher education.

Pedagogical expertise primarily include the field of architecture with a focus on wood technology. Pedagogical expertise is demonstrated through documented experience of teaching at both undergraduate and advanced level and postgraduate level, as well as documented experience of supervision of degree projects, supervision of doctoral students and pedagogical development work.

The examination of the pedagogical expertise should be given as much care as to the examination of the scientific expertise.

Further qualifications

The ability to collaborate with the surrounding community will be assessed on the basis of the applicant's experience of collaboration with the business community and with researchers and actors from other scientific fields.

Administrative skills, as well as the ability to develop and lead activities and staff at the university must refer to documented ability to organize research within the subject area for the position, as well as the ability to organize education at undergraduate, advanced level and postgraduate level.

Great emphasis is placed on personal suitability and the ability to constructively communicate with actors within and outside Umeå University.
