Umeå University, Medicinska fakulteten

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

Project description

Parkinson's disease is characterized by degeneration of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra and altered dopamine transmission. The underlying causes and origin of Parkinson's disease are to date unknown and symptoms of the disease are first detectable at advanced stages of neurodegeneration, thus preventing early diagnose.

The project focuses on the molecular mechanisms behind neurodegeneration of dopaminergic neurons as well as the discovery of early biomarkers of Parkinson’s disease. A second part of the project will aim to investigate possible treatment strategies to counteract dopamine cell neurodegeneration and hinder disease progression.

The main experimental methodology will be based on: i) in vivo animal neuroimaging including PET/CT and MRI. ii) tissue dissection, immunohistochemistry, cell cultures and molecular biology techniques.

Work tasks

  • To design and perform the experiments related to the project. To present research results at conferences and write publications under the supervision of the group leader.
  • Candidates are also expected to contribute with own ideas within the research project and apply for own grants related to the project.

  • Qualified applicants should have a documented experience in one, or several fields related to the project such as; Neurosciences, molecular biology, cell biology, neuroimaging, laboratory animal research, cell culture, histological techniques and fluorescence microscopy.
  • A certificate which permits working with laboratory animals including rats and mice is mandatory. Permission to work with laboratory animals in Sweden is an advantage.
  • We will place great emphasis on personal suitability. The ideal candidate should have academic ambitions and should be willing to take on scientific challenges.
