Senior Research Engineer in Responsible AI with focus on Specification, Monitoring and Auditing of Autonomous Systems


The Department of Computing Science at Umeå University (http://www.cs.umu.se) is recruiting a Senior Research Engineer with focus on specification, monitoring and auditing of autonomous systems. The position is within the Responsible Artificial Intelligence group at Umeå University. The Responsible Artificial Intelligence group conducts research into AI systems that meet their social responsibility, including the development of theories, models and tools for oversight, accountability and verification, and methods to analyse, design, measure and audit social implications. The group collaborates with several national and international research groups, and has active links with industry and policy organisations. Description of work
As a Senior Research Engineer, you will be a member of the Responsible AI team at Umeå University. You will contribute to team’s research efforts on the development of intelligent systems, as well as in understanding the effects of their deployment on our societies. In particular, you will work on the development of formal methods and tools to design, monitor, constrain and govern trustworthy AI systems, and will participate in the definition and analysis of case studies to evaluate the practical application of the tools and methodologies developed.
Your research will focus on the following key topics:
• Development of formal specification languages to encode social, ethical and legal requirements for autonomous systems;
• Explainable, transparent formalisations of ethical, social and legal constraints;
• Pre-, During- and Post- deployment monitoring methods for autonomous systems.

The research will be performed jointly with senior researchers and PhD students within our research group, as well as with our national and international partners. Proposal writing and coordination tasks within large-scale projects may also be part of the tasks. The selected candidate is also expected to participate in teaching and other education activities for around 20% of the employment.

The appointment is a permanent position with full-time employment. The employment will start 2021-01-01, or as otherwise agreed.

Qualifications
Applicants must have earned a PhD or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Mathematics, Computer Science or a related subject relevant for the position.

Demonstrated experience in the form of high-quality publications in both of the following areas is required:
• artificial intelligence, in particular Responsible AI (e.g. IJCAI, https://www.ijcai.org/)
• formal logic (e.g. CSL, https://www.eacsl.org/)

Postdoc experience in the area of the position is highly meriting. Experience in PhD student supervision, grant writing and teaching is a merit.
Ideal candidates should be capable of independent research and like to work with challenging problems and innovative solutions. Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is required.
