Associate professor in Human Geography specializing in Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

The Department of Geography is looking to appoint an Associate professor in human geography specializing in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to start as soon as possible or as otherwise agreed.

Tasks
The appointment is permanent and includes teaching and research. Teaching is primarily carried out in first cycle and second cycle programs. The appointed person is expected to be responsible for courses in Geographical Information Systems (GIS), but teaching outside of this field may be included. The appointment also includes course coordination, including course development and administrative tasks.                    

Location for the appointment is Umeå.  

Qualifications
According to the appointment’s procedure for teachers at Umeå University (ref. no. FS 1.1-57-18), a person is qualified for appointment as associate professor if he or she has demonstrated educational expertise and holds a doctorate or has attained equivalent academic competence or other professional skills relevant with regards to the subject area of the appointment. 

For this appointment, an applicant with a completed doctoral degree in human geography specializing in Geographical Information Systems (GIS), or an equivalent academic competence, is qualified.

Assessment criteria and weighting of assessment criteria
A general basis for assessment for teaching staff at Umeå University is good cooperative skills and the expertise and general suitability required to complete the work duties satisfactorily.

In the assessment, the same care and weight shall be devoted to scientific and educational expertise. Administrative expertise will also be considered.

When assessing scientific expertise, scientific quality must first and foremost be taken into account. The scope of the research, mainly with regard to depth and breadth, must also be given importance. Special emphasis is placed on research in the subject of human geography, preferably research where Geographical Information Systems have been applied. Demonstrated ability to initiate, plan and develop research as well as ability to obtain research funding in national and international competition is given great importance. Great emphasis will also be placed on the ability to collaborate with the surrounding society and to spread information about research and development work.

When assessing the pedagogical skills, documented experience of planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching, as well as of supervision and examination, will be taken into account. Special emphasis is placed on experiences of teaching about Geographical Information Systems within a human geographical or other social science framework.

Administrative skills can be demonstrated, among other ways, through experience in planning educational activities or projects, skills in developing and leading others, and administrative experience.
