The department of applied educational science is looking for a postdoctoral research fellow with an interest and documented competence in motivation research and quantitative research methods, for a position as post doc researcher in a project on subjectively reported and objectively observed effort and motivation, and relationships between these variables and performance. Project description
The position is connected to a research project (funded by the Swedish Research Council) exploring motivation, persistence and performance in the large-scale international study PISA. Research questions within the project are related to

  • How self-reported motivation, task-specific and domain-specific, relates to other variables and to achievement
  • How objective measures of effort and persistence, assessed through student interactions with the computer-based PISA test, relates to self-reported motivation and performance.
  • Investigation of the added value of looking at response behavior in addition to self-report and overall achievement score.

Job description
The successful applicant will be responsible for planning and conducting research within the project described above. The details of the appointment will be determined together with the project leader, depending on the specific interest and competences of the applicant and the needs of the project. Regardless of specific research questions, the work will include analyses and interpretation of large and complex data.

Qualification requirements
The candidate is required to have a PhD degree in relevant area, and expertise in quantitative research design and statistical analysis of large-scale data, preferably in the field of education. Eligible for employment as a postdoc are persons who completed their doctoral degree maximum three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, the doctoral degree may have been completed earlier. The position further requires that the applicant is proficient in academic written and spoken English.

In ranking qualified applicants, special consideration will be given to academic and personal qualifications and the proposed research plan, as well as previous documented experience of research in related areas. Experience from work with large-scale data from questionnaire studies, and/or process data from digital achievement test is a merit, as is experience from doing research on student motivation, and scientific publication in the fields of achievement testing, student motivation, educational psychology and/or psychometrics.

Employment conditions
The position is a two-year, full-time position, and consists of at least 80 percent research and up to 20 percent teaching. The successful candidate shall be based at the department and take an active part in its activities.

About us
The department of applied educational science (TUV) has approximately 115 employees working in teaching, research and commission service. The research is concerned with applied education broadly, and cover areas such as conditions for learning in different contexts, information technologies for learning, educational measurement and evaluation. The current position is placed in the section of the department doing research and development in the area of educational measurement, with a particular focus on large-scale achievement testing.
