Assistant professor in Historical Demography and Health

The Centre for Demographic and Ageing Research (CEDAR) is looking to appoint an Associate Senior Lecturer in Historical Demography and Health to start as soon as possible or according to agreement.

Tasks
The position as associate senior lecturer is 4 years. During these 4 years, 80 % of the working time should be spent on research within historical demography and health specializing in the disability research based on quantitative analyses of historical demographic data. The associate senior lecturer will work in collaboration with other researchers at CEDAR but will also be encouraged to develop research independently.

The remaining 20 % will be spent on other duties, primarily supervision of students on under-graduate and post-graduate levels, lecturing, course development, administrative tasks, and participation in pedagogical courses for university teachers.

The selected candidate is expected to collaborate with other researchers within the field and to actively apply for research finance from external funders.

Location for the appointment is Umeå.  

Eligibility
Qualified for appointment as associate senior lecturer is a person with a doctoral degree or equivalent academic competence. In order to be appointed, the candidate should have completed their doctoral degree or equivalent academic competence no more than five years before the deadline of the application as associate senior lecturer. For this position the qualification refers to a completed doctoral degree in history or an equivalent academic competence on historical demography.

Assessment criteria and their weight
A general basis for assessment for teaching staff at Umeå University is good cooperative skills and the expertise and suitability required to complete the work duties satisfactorily in general.

The potential for becoming a senior lecture within the four-year period is another criterion for the assessment.  

In the assessment for a position as Associate Senior Lecturer, care shall be devoted to both research, educational and other relevant skills.

The assessment of research skills shall be based on the applicant’s independent scientific contribution. Criteria for the assessment are:

- quality, extent and originality of the research within historical demography based on quantitative analysis of data from historical databases.
- publications in renowned peer-review international journals.

For the appointment as associate senior lecturer, teaching proficiency is based on demonstrated interest in educational development within the research field and on any experience of teaching academic subjects at university level. This expertise can be supplemented through training in higher education pedagogy.

In the weighing of different assessment criteria for the appointment of the position as associate senior lecturer, shall research skills within the field of historical demography and health based on quantitative analyses of historical databases be prioritized. 

In the assessment of scientific skills, care shall especially be devoted to originality, independence and potential to develop successful research within historical demography and health and also to experience of publishing in renowned international peer-review journals,

Additional criteria for the assessment are documented experience of research collaboration and experience of working with national and international project applications.

The assessment of scientific skills will also be based on the originality, quality and relevance of the applicant’s scientific plan.

Criteria for the assessment of pedagogical skills are documented experience of teaching and development of courses at university level.
Criteria for the assessment of other relevant skills are documented experience of administrative tasks, ability to meet deadlines and to communicate in Swedish and English. The ability to cooperate outside of the university and to provide information on research and development will also be emphasized.

More about the Centre for Demographic and Ageing Research (CEDAR)
Centre for Demographic and Ageing Research (CEDAR) has currently 60 employees and about 30 researchers active at the research unit. In focus is research on demographic changes, ageing and health, based on historical and contemporary databases. The research is internationally renowned. The infrastructure unit at CEDAR is developing longitudinal population databases for research in demography, history, medicine and social sciences, including research on health and disability.
