The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

Description

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in public health to conduct research on gender based violence from a qualitative and gender theoretical perspective. The aim, theoretical and methodological approach will be formulated in a research plan by the applicant. The application should be connected to the research field of gender based violence, should include a strong gender/feminist theoretical frame and take a qualitative approach. The project can focus on any geographical area and build upon either already collected data or new data collection or a combination of both. In addition to implementing the research proposal, some teaching on undergraduate and advanced levels might be included.

Eligibility

The applicant must have a PhD in Gender Studies, areas related to Social Sciences, Public Health or other relevant subject areas for the research project. The applicant should have competence in public health, gender studies and qualitative research methodologies. Qualified to be employed as a postdoctoral researcher is the person who has completed a PhD or has a foreign degree that is deemed to correspond to a PhD. In the first instance, it should be considered as a graduate no more than three years before the end of the application period. If there are special reasons, a candidate who has completed a PhD before may be considered.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for appointment as postdoctoral researcher are that the candidate must comply with the degree of expertise required to qualify for the position. The candidate should have experience conducting qualitative research on violence against women and/or feminism or gender in connection with health. The candidate should have good skills in written and spoken English. An important basis for assessment is the contribution to the research area as described in the applicant's research plan (see below) and previous scientific production.

Since the position of postdoctoral researcher will mainly focus on their own research, scientific competence will be weighted more than pedagogical and educational competence in the assessment of applicants' qualifications. The ability to conduct independent research, produce scientific publications, and the ability to participate in research collaborations are important merits. Other assessment criteria include good cooperation skills and engagement with civil society and activist networks.

The application shall include:

  • Cover letter
  • CV/resume
  • A critical reflection on self-implemented research in relation with this new position (max 1000 words)
  • Scientific publications relevant for the position
  • Certified copies of grades and diplomas
  • Contact details of 3 reference persons from whom letters of recommendation can be requested
  • Research plan (max 2500 words), that includes aim, gender/feminist theoretical/conceptual framework(s) and methodology.
  • Any other merits you wish to invoke.

The postdoctoral position is a full time (100%) two-year position.

The employment is expected to start in October 2020. The postdoc will be affiliated with the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health. Last day to apply is May 25th.

Further information is provided by Professor Isabel Goicolea (isabel.goicolea@umu.se), Department of Epidemiology and Global Health, Umeå University.

We look forward to receiving your application!
