The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

The department of Clinical Microbiology, Umeå University, is looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher in the area of antiviral immunology with focus on human hantavirus infections. The 2 year full-time position will be based at the Department of Clinical Microbiology, Umeå University.

Position description

The successful applicant will be part of a collaboration between Associate Professors Mattias Forsell, Umeå University, Sweden and Tomas Strandin, University of Helsinki, Finland. The overall focus of the project is to investigate protective antibody-medicated mechansisms against hantavirus infections and preceeding humoral immune responses. Due to the potential severity of human hantavirus infections and the lack of treatment, many of the experiments within this project will be performed under biosafety level 3 conditions, including in vitro cell culture work and virus challenge experiments in small animals. 

Qualification requirements

To qualify the applicant must hold a doctoral degree or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent to a doctorate in Immunology, Molecular Biology or similar.

The applicant should have extensive hands-on experience working with hantavirus infection under BSL3 condition.  Previous experience with research on the molecular virology of hantavirus infection and a proven track record of publications within the hantavirus field is advantageous. The applicant must be able to work independently and excellent communication skills in English is a requirement.

Selection criteria

In the first place applicants who have completed a doctoral degree no more than three years before the application deadline are considered. If there are special reasons, an earlier doctoral degree could be considered. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave or clinical service, trust assignments within trade union organizations or other similar circumstances”.
