The Department of Education is one of the largest within the Faculty of Social Sciences with more than 80 employees. Prioritized areas for research are Sports Education, Leadership Organization and Work Life, Learning and ICT, Didactics, evaluation and assessment, Special Education and Gender and pedagogical processes in society. The department offers a wide range of courses and participates in a number of programs, including Teacher Programs, the Special Education Program, the Sports Science Program, the Human resource management Program and the Police Program. The focus of the PhD position

The PhD position is in Education with a focus on gender- and norm-critical perspectives on working life or higher education. At the Department of Education, research conducted within this area is primarily located to two of the department's prioritized areas; Gender and educational processes in society (GePS) and Leadership, organization and working life (LOA). The applicant is required to independently formulate a research plan in which gender and norm-critical perspectives is the focus of investigation either in working life or in higher education (for more information, go to the section Application)

Requirements

To be eligible for employment as a PhD student, basic and special qualifications are required. Basic eligibility means that one: a) has passed a degree at an advanced level, or b) has fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are obtained at advanced level, or c) in any way within or outside Sweden has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge ( HF 7 Chapter 39).

In order to correspond to the requirement for special eligibility to be admitted to postgraduate studies in Education, the applicant must have a basic university education in Education of at least 90 higher education credits and a) have completed a degree at an advanced level in Education, or b) have 60 higher education credits at advanced level within Education Or (c) have other equivalent education of relevance, with similar scope and depth. Applicants who otherwise have acquired skills that are deemed equivalent to these are also eligible.

The selection among eligible applicants will primarily consider:
• ability to successfully complete a PhD program
• previous study results
• the quality of the submitted research plan, in relation to the focus of the advertised PhD position

The following assessment criteria are used when assessing the ability to successfully complete the PhD program:
• analytical ability,
• communicative ability, written and oral
• critical ability
• independence
• performance within given time frames

For this position Documented knowledge and qualifications within gender studies is considered a merit.

About the employment

The PhD program carried out in collaboration with the Graduate School of Gender Studies. The duration of the PhD programme is four years. Initially, the duration of employment is one year, after which is the contract is renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, provided that the individual study plan is followed. The position may also include part-time teaching (max 20%). If so, the contract is extended, corresponding to the time spent teaching, up to five years at a maximum. Salary placement takes place according to a fixed salary ladder for PhD students. Place of employment is Umeå.

The PhD position is given in collaboration with Umeå Centre for Gender Studies and the Graduate School of Gender Studies offering an interdisciplinary study context where the student belongs to two departments: UCGS and the Department of Education.
