Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Umeå University is dedicated to providing creative environments for learning and work. We offer a wide variety of courses and programmes, world leading research, and excellent innovation and collaboration opportunities. More than 4 100 employees and 34 000 students have already chosen Umeå University. We welcome your application!

Umeå Plant Science Center (UPSC) is one of Europe's strongest research environment for basic plant research (www.upsc.se). The first research engineer position is going to be placed in Nathaniel Street at the Department of Plant Physiology, Umeå University, which is part of UPSC. Our common goal is to understand the adaptability of plants and acclimatization to a changing environment.

Description

To strengthen innovation of biological production using the latest advances in genomic sciences, the Knut and Wallenberg foundation (KAW) has financed several positions at UPSC.  The combined genomic projects target innovation in tree species including conifer genome sequencing and re-sequencing to identify genome evolution, genomic base of observed variation in phenotypic traits, RNA-Seq to identify candidate genes and gene networks for adaptive and economically important tree traits, and application of genomic selection to genetic improvement of tree species. We are looking for a first research engineer to conduct field sampling, laboratory works and research on conifer genomic science and genomic selection in Norway spruce and Scots pine. Last day to apply is 20 November 2019.

Understanding genomic base of trait variation and selection based on genome sequencing is a new frontier research area for genetic improvement of animal and plant. You will participate genomics projects of Norway spruce and Scots pine including: (1) Design and organize sampling strategy and supervise sampling of biological material for DNA and RNA extraction; (2) supervise laboratory works related to DNA and RNA extraction, and genotyping; (3) Quantitative genetics analysis and genome-wide association study for quantitative traits including phenology, flower, solid-wood, pulping, bio-energy, disease and adaptive traits; (4) Application of genomic selection to conifer trees.

Qualifications

Highly motivated and team-oriented candidates with experience in biology, molecular genetics, tree genetics and quantitative and population genetics. To qualify, you should have a PhD degree in subjects relevant for the position. Good English communication and writing skills are required.

2 year employment, 60%. Starting 1st of January 2020 or by agreement.

Application

The application should contain:

  1. A personal letter that describes qualifications, research interests, and motivation for application
