Umeå University, Medicinska fakulteten

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest institutions of higher education with over 35,000 students and 4,200 faculty and staff. We are characterised by world-leading research in several scientific fields and a multitude of educations ranked highly in international comparison. Umeå University is also the site of the pioneering discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 genetic scissors - a revolution in genetic engineering that has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

At Umeå University, everything is nearby. Our cohesive campus environment makes it easy to meet, collaborate and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture where we rejoice in each other's successes.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

The department of Integrative Medical Biology announces a full time position as Senior Research Assistant in Dr. Richard Lundmark’s group.

Project description:

The successful applicant will participate within a research project headlined
"Mechanisms of viral factory generation". Following uptake into host cells, flaviviruses reprograms the cell into becoming a factory for the production of new viruses. The viral proteins induce the generation of cavities in cellular organelles, so called replication compartments, which protect the replicated RNA from detection and degradation by the cellular response system. Today, very little is known about the mechanisms that lead replication vesicle formation. We take a novel approach using the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) model system to characterize the mechanisms for how viral proteins remodel cellular membranes into replication vesicles.
The work includes design, cloning, and development of stable cell lines, protein purification, APEX-based screening and identification of interacting proteins using mass spectrometry, siRNA-based knock down, analysis of cell lines using fluorescent microscopy and electron microscopy.

Eligible to apply are individuals with a PhD in a relevant area or equivalent scientific skills.
We are looking for enthusiastic candidates with experience from infectious studies and a biochemical and cell biological background. Prior experience of biochemistry, cell biology and imaging in active research lab will be an added advantage as well as experience of viral research. The successful candidate is expected to design and execute his or her project independently, but also work in close collaboration with the other members of the team.

Application should include:

1. A brief cover letter (about one page) that describes the applicants research experience, research interests, and suitability for the project.

2. Curriculum vitae including information about academic degrees (with verifications), technical expertise, employments, list of publications, and names and contact information for two references.
