The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 12 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

Doctoral (PhD) student position in Medical Sciences specializing in Molecular Medicine
at the Department of Medical Biosciences and Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine

The Department of Medical Biosciences, which has approximately 90 employees, carries out high quality research and education. The department consists of three units: Pathology, Clinical Chemistry and Medical and Clinical Genetics (www.medbio.umu.se). We are currently offering a doctoral (PhD) student position within the project “RNA biology and cancer". The position is financed by the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine (WCMM) at Umeå University. WCMM has been established as part of a national agenda with the goal of regaining a leading position for Sweden within medical research (wcmm.umu.se). Within the WCMM network there will be development of local and national networks, where the researchers will be given excellent opportunities to interact with other researchers and further develop their skills within these networks.


Project description
The project will be conducted under the supervision of Assistant Professor, Francesca Aguilo. The research group investigates how changes in RNA modification contribute to breast cancer progression as well as drug resistance. The applicant will combine genome-wide sequencing and proteomic techniques to decipher the role of RNAs modifications in cancer. 2D and 3D cell culture models, patient samples, as well as mouse orthotopic transplantation will be used to study the central RNA-based regulatory circuitry in breast tumorigenesis.

Admission requirements
To be admitted for doctoral studies the applicant is required to have completed a second-cycle level degree, or completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits are at second-cycle level or have an equivalent education from abroad, or equivalent qualifications.

In order to meet the requirement of specific competence to be admitted for doctoral studies in medical science, the applicant you are required to have completed courses in the field of molecular medicine or another subject considered to be directly relevant to the specialization in question.

Good knowledge in English, both written and spoken, is required. Experience in laboratory work, method development as well as different biochemical methods for analysis is required. The applicant must be able to work both independently and as part of a team, and much focus will be given to the candidate’s potential collaborative skills.

Terms of employment
The position is intended to result in a doctoral degree and the main task of the PhD student is to pursue doctoral studies, which include both participation in research and postgraduate courses.
