We are now recruiting a PhD student to a project where we study translocation of bacterial proteins, especially in Gram-negative bacteria. The main techniques that we use are structural biology in combination with biochemical methods. The applicant should have experience in biochemistry research and be interested in structural biology. Application deadline is 5 August 2019.

Description
The project involves research on bacterial proteins using structural biology approaches. In particular, the lab uses protein crystallography in combination with biophysical methods and cryo-electron microscopy. This project is focused on a protein machinery that is involved in transportation of proteins from the bacterial inner membrane to the outer. Further, we are interested in the assembly of bacterial surface proteins. Your tasks will include protein purification and characterization, protein crystallization and structure determination using X-ray crystallography. You may also be involved in data acquisition for cryo-electron tomography and single particle cryo-electron microscopy.

Admission requirements
You are required to have completed a second-cycle level degree, or completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits are at second-cycle level, or have an equivalent education from abroad, or equivalent qualifications.

To fulfil the specific entry requirements for doctoral studies in chemistry, you are required to have completed first-cycle courses of at least 90 ECTS credits within the field of chemistry or another subject considered to be directly relevant to the specialization in question. Of those 90 ECTS credits, at least 15 ECTS credits shall have been acquired at second-cycle level within the specialization or an equivalent subject.

Good knowledge in English, both written and spoken, is required. Experience in research related to biochemistry, achieved through for example a diploma work at advanced level in a research group or similar, is a requirement. You should have a keen interest in the project, like experimental work, be precise, and be able to work both independently and in a group. Prior experience in membrane protein biochemistry is an advantage but not a priority.

About the position
The position is intended to result in a doctoral degree and the main task of the PhD student is to pursue their doctoral studies which include both participation in research and postgraduate courses. The duties can include teaching and other departmental work (up to a maximum of 20%). Employment is limited to four years of full-time or up to five years for teaching part time. Salary is set in accordance with the established salary ladder for PhD position.
