Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Department of Molecular Biology provides a vibrant interfaculty research environment and there is access to a wide range of state-of-the-art imaging, metabolomics, genomics and screening facilities.

We are looking for a post doctor for employment at The Department of Molecular Biology. It is a temporary position for two years on fulltime. Planned start date is  September 1, 2019 or as agreed. Last day to apply is July 8, 2019.

Project description and work tasks

Metabolomics, the comprehensive measurement of small molecules in a biological system, has made several analytical advancements over the last decade towards providing investigators with better data. This project aims to develop very-high throughput metabolite and metabolomics measurements. The purpose of these type of measurements is to enable analysis of large sample cohorts, follow biochemistry with high time resolution or to evaluate large libraries of compound libraries through biochemical assays.

The aim of this project is to explore possibilities of using specialized, high injection capacity mass spectrometry for metabolomics applications within the areas described above.

The work tasks include to design and perform experiments and to write reports intended for scientific publication.

Qualifications

A person who has been awarded a doctorate degree (PhD) or a foreign qualification deemed to be the equivalent of a doctorate in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular microbiology at the time of the recruitment should be qualified for employment as a postdoctor. To be eligible you should have completed your PhD degree a maximum of three years before the end of the application period, unless special circumstances exist.

We are looking for candidates with an interest in development of high throughput applications and assays using mass spectrometry. Candidates must have documented experience (including hands-on experience) in mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography techniques. Candidates must be fluent in spoken and written English. Because the project will be of collaborative nature, candidates need to be able to work productively also in a team. Excellent communication skills are required for interacting effectively with colleagues and peers, including colleagues from complementary research fields.

Previous experience of research on a RapidFire system and/or liquid handling robots for sample preparation using solid phase extraction or similar is considered a strong merit. Moreover, previous work experience in the field of assay development within biochemical applications is highly desirable.

Application

The application should include:

  • A personal cover letter explaining why you are interested in the position, how you can contribute to the project and in which direction you may want to develop it (no more than 2 A4 pages).
  • A curriculum vitae that documents academic education and past and previous employments.
  • Your publication list.
  • A copy of the PhD certificate and other relevant degree certificates.
  • A copy of doctoral thesis
  • Names and contact details with e-mail addresses of two or three academic references.
  • Other relevant documentation you wish to include in support of your application.

The application should be written in English or Swedish. You apply through our recruitment system. Log into the system and apply via the button at the bottom of the webpage. The deadline for application is July 8, 2019.
