We are looking for a project assistant or research engineer for the department of ecology and environmental science at Umeå University. The employment is on fulltime for 12 months. The employment is expected to start on July 1st 2019, or according to agreement. The deadline for application is June 4th 2019. 

Project description
We perform research on microbial geoecology and environmental biotechnology, where the purpose is to explore screen for novel microbes in plants and pollinating insects. The purpose is to explore their potential for sustainable and environmental friendly products and processes in the industry, in particular within the forest/cellulose and food industrial fields.

Work tasks
You will be involved in different research projects for screening of microbes in different species of plants and pollinating insects. You will perform both field studies (forest, meadow, soil, agriculture etc.) as well as different types of analyses in microbiology, molecular biology and bioinformatics.

Qualifications
The successful candidate should have a bachelor- or a master’s degree in biology, preferably in plant biology, insect biology, microbial ecology or forest biotechnology, or similar to these. It is considered a merit if you have some experience from working with phototrophic organisms (e.g. moss or plants in forests) and with microbial and molecular biological techniques and bioinformatics. Good oral and writing skills in English are essential qualifications. You are creative,take initiative and have good social skills and the ability to work independently, as well as in a team. Since many of our projects are performed in collaboration with other research groups or with the industry, it is a benefit if you are capable of working interdisciplinary. Applicants with an interest in outreach activities and citizen science are appreciated.
