Umeå University, Department of Computing Science

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Department of Computing Science in cooperation with the Graduate School of Gender Studies is seeking outstanding candidates for a PhD student position in Computing Science with focus on gender and natural language processing. Deadline for application is 2019-03-04.

The Department of Computing Science is a dynamic environment with around 100 employees representing more than 20 countries worldwide. We conduct education and research on a broad range of topics in Computing Science. The Foundations of Language Processing group conducts foundational and practical research on the processing of both natural and formal languages.
The Graduate School of Gender Studies has since 2001 co-financed research degree programmes at all faculties at Umeå University. A PhD student’s affiliation with Umeå Center for Gender Studies therefore entails participation in a unique and dynamic research training environment, at present seeing around thirty active PhD students.

Research project

Within this PhD position, you will employ and develop methods from natural language processing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to understand how gender bias, and other kinds of biases, appear in different types of text. A central project output is software tools for detecting typical expressions of bias. We will also consider how biased textual data, used in machine learning, can lead to biased models.

We will study what differences there are in how different groups are treated in text. We will compare women and men, but will also look at other groups, such as LGBTQ persons, ethnic minorities, etc. We extract typical features that distinguish writing about the different groups. We also study the role of the author and analyze how the type of text used influences the results. A critical analysis of how bias in the choice of data can affect the choice of features and, in the end, the quality of a learned model will be central. There are several recent examples of how machine learning algorithms, exposed to biased data, or outright manipulation, have resulted in strongly prejudicial models. Combining statistical methods and qualitative methods applied in gender studies, we will make a concerted effort to understand how bias is expressed in text. This will also be the foundation for software intended to automatically analyze text with respect to bias.

You, as a PhD student, will have a big influence on the scope and direction of the project, and thus be able to put your own emphasis on it, using your own intellect and creativity. If you are interested in a career in natural language processing or machine learning, and have a strong interest in gender studies and issues concerning the ethical use of computational methods, you should certainly apply for this position.
