Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Department of Ecology and Environmental Science (Umeå University, Sweden) invites applicants for a PhD position on climate and forestry impacts on greenhouse gas emission from running waters. The expected starting date for the PhD position is May 01, 2019 but this can be negotiated. Application deadline is March 18, 2019.

Project description
Forestry play an important role for fulfilling commitments to mitigate release of greenhouse gases (GHG) to the atmosphere. Yet, the current understanding of the role of forestry for offsetting emissions is incomplete because GHG emissions from streams are not considered. The aim of the project is to assess the effect of forestry on the GHG emissions from boreal streams. We will test the hypothesis that forestry has major impacts on stream GHG emissions over the full forest rotation cycle but also that the effects vary depending on forest management practices and variability in climatic conditions. The project will be based on (1) a detailed study of streams before and after logging and (2) large scale comparative studies of streams with differences in harvested catchment areas, riparian buffer zones, and climatic conditions.

The position is financed by the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning (FORMAS) and Umeå University. Jan Karlsson will be principal supervisor and Ryan Sponseller will be co-supervisor.

Admission requirements
The candidate should have an academic background in Earth Science, Ecology, or from similar fields. For this position, we are looking for a person with experience of and interest in biogeochemical processes in stream ecosystems.

The recruitment procedure for the position is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance. Prerequisites include 240 ECTS credits (Swe. högskolepoäng) of higher education studies of which 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level), or equivalent competence.

This should include at least one course on advanced level in physical geography or a similar relevant field as well as a 15 ECTS credits independent project in physical geography or a similar relevant field. The requirements should be met at the time of acceptance to doctoral studies.

Additional requirements for this position are good knowledge of aquatic biogeochemistry. Driver’s license for cars is also required. Strong merits are: experience of fieldwork in streams; work with carbon cycling in aquatic systems. The successful applicant should have good ability to write and speak in English, creativity, power of initiative, independence, and ability to collaborate. Evaluations will be based on the application and on interviews.
