The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics conducts research in computational mathematics, discrete mathematics, mathematical modelling and analysis, and mathematical statistics. Our teaching is conducted at all levels and includes mathematics, mathematical statistics and computational science. Among our partners are international research groups, academic institutions, public organizations and companies.

The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics invites applications for a tenure-track position as Associate Senior Lecturer in Computational Mathematics. Last application date is 2019-02-13.

Background
The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics conducts strong research in several areas of Computational Mathematics, including geometric numerical integration, cut finite elements, and applied spectral theory. In cooperation with the Departments of Computing Science and Physics, we also run a joint interdisciplinary research environment in Computational Science, UMIT Research Lab, with a rich variety of activities, seminars and opportunities for academic and industrial collaborations. With this recruitment, we wish to strengthen our research in Computational Mathematics. For the right candidate we offer good opportunities to build up his or her own research agenda.

The employment
The person we are seeking will conduct research in Computational Mathematics and contribute to the continued development of the research environment in the field. Other tasks include teaching in Mathematics. Undergraduate programs at the department, with academically strong students, offer the opportunity to supervise graduate theses in collaboration with external partners. Additionally, supervision of PhD students and postdocs, primarily in Computational Mathematics, may be a possibility. The person employed is expected to actively seek external funding for his or her research activities.

The employment is limited to 5 years and consists of 4 years own research and 1 year teaching. The position is a “tenure-track” that makes it possible to develop and establish a long-term research. An Associate Senior Lecturer has the right, upon request, to be considered for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Qualifications
The applicant should have a doctoral degree in Mathematics or equivalent scientific competence. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their doctoral degree or equivalent academic competence no more than five years before the deadline of the application period.

The basis for the evaluation is the degree of scientific skill, as primarily assessed on the basis of peer-reviewed publications in internationally renowned journals and conference proceeding that apply a so-called peer-review system. Emphasis will be placed on the quality of the publications in which the applicant was the principal author. In addition, the evaluation will take into account the level of teaching skills as well as administrative and other skills of relevance to the subject matter and the duties of the position. Furthermore, the ability to independently organize, and manage projects will be considered as well as the ability to collaborate with the surrounding society. The candidate should have international research experience and proven knowledge that strengthens the expertise in research in Umeå. A documented ability to independently and flexibly operate, communicate and collaborate inside and outside the academic environment is advantageous. The position also requires a good knowledge of English, both spoken and written. If the person appointed does not speak Swedish, he or she is expected to learn Swedish within three years from the start of the appointment.

Applicants should be active researchers in Computational Mathematics and also intend to conduct research in this area. A demonstrated ability to obtain competitive research funding, especially from large and reputable research funders, is an advantage. The description of the research to be carried out within the position will be of great significance in the selection of applicants.

Teaching skills shall refer to subject areas of mathematics. Documented experience of successful teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as supervision of student theses and educational development projects is advantageous.

Administrative skills shall refer to the ability of developing and managing activities and staff at the university, and the ability to create cooperation between research and education at all levels, in the subject area for the position, as well as with other disciplines. Well-documented ability to lead, organize and develop research activities is advantageous.
