Professor of Education

Responsibilities

The position of Professor involves leading research and developing the research environment at the Department by conducting one’s own research and teaching and supervising first-cycle, second-cycle and third-cycle students. As a Professor, you will be expected to build further upon and develop the local, national and international research projects being conducted at the Department.

Responsibilities will also include helping to inform about the department’s research and development activities, initiating and contributing to the planning of research projects and actively working with applications for external research financing. The workplace is Umeå, and the position involves active participation in activities at the Department.

Qualification

To qualify for the position of Professor of Education, candidates must be able to display both research and teaching expertise within the field of education or equivalent, according to Chapter 4, Section 3 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointments Procedure for teachers at Umeå University.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for appointment as a Professor shall be the degree of the expertise required as a qualification for employment. Other assessment criteria comprise administrative expertise and cooperative skills.

Research expertise comprises independent research work, the capacity to obtain research funds in competition with other researchers, the ability to plan and lead research activities, documented national and international research cooperation, publication and the ability to communicate research to society. Expertise may also be displayed by leadership of research projects and successful supervision.

Teaching expertise comprises a teacher's work with students, the teacher's own educational development and contribution to the educational development of the organisation. This also includes participation in third-cycle activities, such as doctoral student supervision and participation in the planning and execution of courses and seminars.

Administrative expertise comprises the ability to develop and lead activities and personnel, to interact with society and to provide information on research and development work. Cooperative skills comprise e.g. formulating, planning, leading and contributing to projects that include several persons, and taking part in joint research projects and other joint activities in the Department.

Grading of assessment criteria

When grading the assessment criteria, research expertise has highest importance. Teaching expertise is also an important criterion. Moreover, the level of ability to develop and lead activities and personnel, to interact with society and to provide information on research and development work shall apply.

When assessing research expertise, special merit is awarded to research within any of the Department of Education's six research areas: Sport Science; Leadership, Organisation and Working Life; Learning and ICT; Didactics, Evaluation and Assessment; Special Education; and Gender and Pedagogical Processes in Society.

Assessment of teaching expertise will focus on planning, execution and evaluation of teaching, supervision and examination. There will also be a focus on knowledge of contract education and second-cycle education.

Assessment of administrative expertise will focus on the expertise to lead and develop activities and personnel, experience from non-regulated assignments for the Department, Faculty or University etc. and by means of a general, well-documented capacity for interdisciplinary cooperation both at home and abroad. There will be a main focus on cooperative skills, the capacity to initiate activities and a commitment towards developing the Department.
