The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

Work description

Responsibilities include managing and conducting high quality research and post graduate training. The infrastructure at the department is primarily organized to support research with in the field of neurosciences. The Department of Integrative Medical Biology is responsible for education in all areas of medical physiology to undergraduate students in the medical and dental school, and in several health care programs at the Faculty of Medicine. Duties therefore also include undergraduate course planning and leadership as well as curriculum development. The position holder is likewise expected to take part in academic leadership both at the reserarch group, department as well as faculty levels.

For applicants with specialist skills in a medical or dental clinical discipline, the employment can be combined with work as a clinical specialist (maximum 13 hours per week) in the Västerbotten County Council, provided approval by the Council.

Entry requirements

To qualify for the position as senior lecturer, applicants must have a doctorate degree (PhD), or an equivalent degree, or other professional abilities that are relevant to the subject matter and duties included in the position. Eligibility rules are described in the Umeå University Hiring Ordinance (No. FS 1.1-851-16).

Due to the Departments undergraduate education commitments, knowledge in medical physiology is required. Such subject competence in medical physiology should include documented undergraduate medical education and experience of planning and teaching in medical physiology at a level of, or compatible with, that taught to medical and dental students. In this perspective, parts of a medical or dental program or a degree as a medical doctor or dentist is an advantage. For combination with work as a clinical specialist, a Swedish Medical or Odontological degree is required.

Assessment criteria

The scientific skills will be assessed with regard to the breadth and depth in research with emphasis on the applicant’s capacity to function as principal investigator. Assessment ofeducational skills will take into account documented teaching experience both at pre- and postgraduate levels. Pedagogical competence may have been obtained through university teaching experience, teacher-training courses, or other training relevant to the subject matter. Leadership and administrative merits include skills to lead a research group and to collaborate with others. Equal care will be given to evaluation of scientific, pedagogic and administrative skills. A medical or dental degree is advantous when other merits are concidered equal among applicants. 

Weightning

The merits of the applicants will be weighted as follows: The scientific and teaching qualifications are considered equally important (3). The ability to lead and to manage is taken into account next (1).

Description of assessment criteria

Innovation, quality and originality in research will be important factors for the sccientific assessment. Examples of factors showing scientific skills are published orignal articles where the applicant´s contributions are clearly outlined. Additional merits are grants obtained in national or international competition with the applicant as principal investigator and assignements as referee in scientific journals. International post doc experience as well as tutoring of PhD students are also merits. The assessment of educational skills will take into account experience in planning, implementation, and evaluation of teaching and if the applicant has publications related to university pedagogics. Administrative merits can be demonstrated by showing ability to lead a research group, obtain funding, develop projects, establish extramural collaborations, experience in education planning. Clinical ability include documented clinical competence.
