Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

Postdoctoral Position (2 years) in Energy Technology and Thermal Process Chemistry

The Thermochemical Energy Conversion Laboratory (TEC-Lab) research environment at the Department of Applied Physics and Electronics invites applicants for a postdoc position. The research is dedicated to studies of rheological properties of slags from high temperature gasification of biomass. The project is part of the Swedish Gasification Center and the B4G node for entrained flow gasification, entirely funded by the Swedish Energy Agency.

Project description

Detailed knowledge of rheological properties of the slag formed from molten ash during entrained flow gasification are of key importance for successful process development. The properties are depending on fuel composition as well as on process variables. The project aims at widening the operational region of known properties to make the technology more flexible and predictable. Specifically, models for viscosity estimations will be theoretically and experimentally evaluated. Furthermore, the models will be implemented in process simulating models and in studies comparing predictions with observations form experiments in larger scale. A significant part of the modeling work will be dedicated to increasing the understanding of effects of partially solidified melts, solubility, and vapor pressures on viscosities.

Competence requirements

To qualify for the position, you should have a PhD degree, or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent, in chemical engineering, energy technology or other relevant area. To be eligible, the degree should have been completed a maximum of three years before the end of the application period unless certain circumstances exist.

We are looking for a highly motivated and responsible candidate who is passionate for developing as an individual scientist as well as a research team member. Documented previous experience with experimental studies of high temperature inorganic chemistry is required, as well as extensive experience from modeling of chemical phase equilibrium and viscosity for relevant systems. Experience from experimental work involving molten ash in larger scale (pilot to industrial), as well as from relevant analytical techniques (e.g. SEM-EDS and XRD) are highly desirable.

Emphasis will also be placed on personal qualities such as collaboration and communication skills and analytical capacity. It is important that you can show initiative, and have an ability to work independently. Since you will work in an international environment, very good communication skills in written and spoken English are required.

The application

The application should include:

  • A cover letter summarizing your qualifications, your scientific interests, and your motives for applying (max 2 pages)

  • A curriculum vitae (CV) with a publication list

  • Copies of relevant degree certificates

  • Copies of the PhD thesis and relevant publications (max 5 publications)

  • Names and contact information of three references.

The application is to be submitted in our e-recruitment system and must be received May 04, 2018 at the latest.

Information

The position is a full-time employment over a period of 24 months, starting 2018-06-01 or according to agreement.
