Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37 000 students and about 4 700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. And the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is what it is all about. But also about delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. This is simply where the future is built.

We are now looking for a lecturer in Industrial Design.

About the position
The main duties consist of planning and implementation of teaching in industrial design. In addition, associated course administration, examination and supervision in the subject are included. External monitoring and development of education in industrial design and related subjects and methods are also included, as well as collaborating and actively participating in department-wide tasks.

The position includes time allocation for individual competence development. This can be applied to pedagogical, practice-related, artistic or subject development activities aligned to the needs of the department.

The work also involves actively initiating collaborations between education at undergraduate, advanced and doctoral level within the subject area of the position with other subject disciplines, professional practitioners and other stakeholders in the field of design and in society in general.

According to the Appointment Procedure at Umeå University, FS 1.1-57-18, chap. 2.8.2 is a person qualified to be employed as a lecturer who has a degree of at least master's level (in industrial design in this case) or has some other professional skills that are of importance regarding the subject content of the position and the duties that will be included in the employment.

Proficient language skills in English, both written and spoken, are a requirement for the position. Proficiency in Swedish, both spoken and written, is considered a merit

Assessment criteria and balance of the grounds
A general assessment basis for teachers at Umeå University is both good collaborative skills, as well as the necessary competence and suitability for performing the duties well.

When selecting applicants for this position, special emphasis will be placed on professional skills relevant to the subject content of the position and the duties that will be included in the employment, which means that documented professional experience as an industrial designer is required.

We then look at the degree of teaching expertise. You must have documented qualifications from teaching in the subject area of industrial design and experience of supervision and educational planning in terms of higher education in design.

In addition, experience of collaboration with the surrounding community is assessed. You should have documented experience of working in collaborative projects with an external party and that in these contexts you have worked with design methodology, design concepts, design processes and design results.

The degree of administrative expertise is assessed based on the ability to independently organize, plan, document and develop educational activities. We value the ability to guide students and the ability to create collaboration between education (within the subject area of the position) and other subject disciplines, with professional practitioners as well as with other actors in the field of design and in society in general.
