Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

The Department of Applied Physics and Electronics currently has around 100 employees and conducts research in fields such as energy technology, laser spectroscopy, medical technology, machine learning and embedded systems, as well as robotics. We are now recruiting a Senior Research Engineer with specialization on multiphase heterogeneous reacting flow modelling of twin shaft regenerative kilns for a project aiming at models with predictive capabilities directly useful for the quicklime industries.

Project Description and working tasks
The project is part of the activities within the Centre for Sustainable Production of Cement and Quicklime at Umeå University and is carried out in close collaboration with quicklime producing companies. The Senior Research Engineer will perform advanced multiphase heterogeneous reacting flow modelling including all steps from model construction to industrial validation and predictions.  The Senior Research Engineer will lead the development, participate in reference meetings, report results, and participate in writing scientific publications together with the rest of the team. The work includes individual analytical work as well as teamwork within the research environment and with the members of the Center for Sustainable Production of Cement and Quicklime at Umeå University.

Qualifications:
The candidate must have a PhD in mechanical engineering, or equivalent, and a specialization on multiphase heterogeneous reacting flow modelling in high temperature applications. Documented experience from modelling of industrially relevant processes for thermochemical energy conversion is a requirement. The applicant must be acquainted with the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ software. The applicant must have a strong interest in development of new directly useful knowledge to support the transition of carbonate rock processing industries, and the applicant must be fluent in English (Proficient user), both in speaking and in writing.

The candidate should be highly motivated, goal-oriented, and have the ability to work both independently and in collaboration with a research team. Previous experience from studies on flame stabilization, calcination reactions, modelling of granular flows, discrete element modelling, writing code in parallel programming, and modelling of twin shaft parallel flow regenerative kilns are all beneficial for the project, and therefore strongly meriting qualifications.

Application
Your application should include the following:

  • A cover letter with a brief description of your qualifications, research interests and motivation for applying, and your contact details (max. 2 pages)
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Certified copies of relevant degree diploma(s) and certificates.
  • Copies of relevant publications.

The application is made through our electronic recruitment system. The closing date is March 25th 2022. The position lasts for 5 months and will open on June 1st 2022 (exact start date can be negotiated).
