Umeå universitet, Medicinska fakulteten

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

The Department of Clinical Sciences is now looking for a postdoctoral fellow to work in pediatrics with a focus on nutrition, neurological development, and neonatology.

The position is full-time for two years, starting on 19 August 2024 or according to agreement. The application deadline is 2024-05-15.

Project description

The research work will be conducted within the N4 Research Group (www.n4researchgroup.se; https://www.umu.se/en/research/groups/n4-research-group/); a very active research group with funding from e.g. The Swedish Research Council, FORTE and ALF.

We conduct several randomized clinical intervention studies. We have unique and large cohorts of very premature infants and we also run the large population study NorthPop (see www.northpop.se) where we collect extensive, longitudinal data from 10,000 families (parents and children).

The initial focus of this postdoctoral project will be studies of children born very prematurely with the aim of finding biomarkers and factors that can influence later health in these high-risk children.

Work responsibilities

In your role as a postdoctoral fellow, you investigate the interaction between different risk factors, to understand how these affect the health of children. The main focus of the studies is on (very) premature infants.

You will work with compilation and analysis of data in various studies, as well as interpretation and presentation of the results. To achieve this, you will need, among other things, expertise in advanced statistical methods and handling of complex and extensive datasets.

The work includes data from medical records and the healthcare's national quality register. Experience of working with medical data is therefore a merit.

The work includes writing scientific articles in English, so you are expected to have excellent written English communication skills.

Other practical and administrative tasks related to data collection and compilation as well as project coordination are also included.

You are expected partly to implement and support already planned projects and partly to independently plan and implement projects, develop methods and carry out statistical analyzes as well as support doctoral students within the group.

As a postdoctoral fellow, you are also expected to contribute to the unit's joint research environment.

Eligibility and other qualifications

Eligible to be employed as a postdoctoral fellow is a person who has completed a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree, in medical clinical/epidemiological research or a related field. This eligibility requirement must be met at the latest at the time the employment decision is made.

Requirements for employment are also good knowledge of advanced statistical methods and handling of complex datasets, as well as excellent skills in writing scientific articles in English.

It is meriting if the applicant has experience of working with medical data and research in an area that is relevant to the current project.

Very good verbal and written knowledge of English is a requirement. Good ability to communicate in Swedish is meriting.

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher who has previously demonstrated the ability to work productively both independently and within a multidisciplinary team. You will have very good analytical and communicative skills. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Skill tests may be used as part of the recruitment process.

Additional useful qualifications

Since employment as a postdoctoral fellow is a career-development position for junior researchers, we are primarily interested in applicants who have completed a doctoral degree no more than three years from the application deadline. If there are special reasons, an applicant who has completed their degree earlier than that may be considered. By special reasons is meant absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical service, appointments of trust within trade unions or other similar circumstances, as well as duties/assignments within the subject area.

Previous experience of working with medical data or from similar research is strongly meritorious.

More information about the position

The employment is a temporary, full-time employment for two years according to the terms of the agreement on temporary employment as a postdoctoral researcher from 1 October 2022.

More information about the group's research can be found on our website www.n4researchgroup.se.
