Umeå universitet, institutionen för datavetenskap

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Department of Computing Science at Umeå University (http://www.cs.umu.se) is seeking outstanding candidates for post-doctoral researcher positions in cloud computing and distributed systems.

The last date for application is 2016-10-31.

The announced positions are in a large, dynamic, and wellestablished research group comprised of 20+ people from 10+ different countries. The group works in close collaboration with leading research institutes such as the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (USA), IMDEA (Spain), and the Lund Center for Control of Complex Engineering Systems (Sweden); as well as with major industrial partners such as Intel Labs, Ericsson, SAP, Red Hat, and IBM. Software is contributed to various open source community efforts including, e.g., NorduGrid/ARC, the Globus Toolkit, and Open Stack.

See http://www.cloudresearch.org for an overview of ongoing research projects and publication lists.

Project description
The positions are funded by a project focused on resource management in large-scale distributed edge and cloud computing environments and reliable provisioning of distributed (service-based) applications.

Possible research topics for the position include, e.g.,

  • modeling and analysis of application architectures and workloads
  • modeling of performance and load propagation in distributed applications
  • optimization of service placement in edge computing environments
  • development of adaptive models for autonomous service remediation

The positions are intended for post-doctoral research to be performed jointly with senior researchers and PhD students in the group, as well as with our national and international collaboration partners. Coordination tasks within large-scale projects may also be included.

The positions are for two years full-time employment. The employment will start 2017-02-01, or as otherwise agreed. The position comes with a competitive salary and (non-mandatory) opportunities for teaching (up to 20% of full-time).

Qualifications

Applicants must have earned a PhD or a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a PhD in Computer Science or a related subject relevant for the position. The PhD degree should not be more than three years old by the application deadline without extenuating circumstances. Strong research merits and excellent publications in the area of the position are highly meriting. Demonstrated skills in statistical or machine learning, mathematical optimization, or software development are also considered merits. Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is required.

Application
A complete application should include:

  • Introductory letter including a 2-page statement of research interests relative to the above topics and a motivation of why your expertise is appropriate for the position

  • Copies of degree certificates, including documentation of completed academic courses and obtained grades
  • A copy of your PhD thesis.
  • Copies of (max 5) original research publications relevant to the above topics, numbered according to the publication list.
  • Names and contact information for three persons willing to act as references
  • Any other information relevant for the position such as description of software development experience, or previous industry experience.

Please observe that all material needs to be in Swedish or English.

Welcome with your application
Applications must be submitted electronically using the e-recruitment system MyNetwork Pro, and be received no later than October 31, 2016. Reference number AN 2.2.1-1136-16.

Further information
The research is performed in collaboration with the High Performance Computing Center North (HPC2N) and the UMIT research laboratory at Umeå University. HPC2N is a member center of the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC) and provides competence and computing resources, including grid and cloud resources, and actively participates in Swegrid, NDGF, NorduGrid, and EGEE. UMIT is an environment for interdisciplinary research in scientific, high-performance, distributed, real-time, and visual computing.
