Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.
The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

A PhD position to The Department of Molecular biology at Umeå University. The project involves identification of bacterial and host factors essential to Borrelia persistence. The position is temporary for four years and starts immediately or by appointment. Last application date is 2016-02-01.
Project description
Certain bacterial pathogens, establish persistent infections in mammalian hosts despite activating inflammatory and antimicrobial responses. Recent data suggest that persistent infection is a specific phase in infection pathogenesis. This thesis project aims to reveal mechanisms involved in establishment of persistent infections. The phenomenon of persistent borreliosis infection has divided the scientific community for decades and is a major cause of antibiotics overuse. In this project we aim to explore the mechanisms involved in Borrelia persistence, and to identify potential inhibiting factors to these mechanisms. The ultimate goal is to identify new bacterial targets that can be explored for development of new antibiotics. The work involves mutagenesis and phenotypic characterization of Borrelia spirochetes, RNA-seq, bioinformatics analyses and animal infection models.
Qualifications
Applicants must hold a University degree equivalent to a European University Master degree in the field of medicine.
Qualified are also those who completed eight semesters of medical or dental program, including medical chemistry, cell and molecular biology, genetics, physiology, microbiology and independent work and those that have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad.
Applicants need to be skilled in both oral and written communication in English, be able to work independently as well as in collaboration with others and be highly motivated. Applicants should have a true interest in the field of molecular infection biology and be willing to take on a scientific and technical challenge. Prior hands on experience in infection biology parasitology, and microbiology is highly desirable and experience from previous experimental work with microbial pathogens is considered a particular merit.
