The Department of Sociology is recruiting a PhD student in Sociology with a focus on work, family, and the welfare state from a comparative perspective. Start date as soon as possible or as agreed. Apply no later than July 21, 2025.
Research Focus
The PhD student will work within the research project "New maps of gender equality? Gender ideals and practices in a comparative perspective." The project analyses the prevalence and development of the second half of the gender revolution: men's participation in home and family life. Ideals and practices related to work and family are compared across different countries, social groups within countries, and over time. The project is based on survey data.
Eligibility
To be admitted to doctoral studies in sociology, applicants must meet both the general and specific entry requirements. General eligibility is granted to those who have completed a second-cycle (advanced level) degree, fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (ECTS), of which at least 60 credits are at the second-cycle level, or who have otherwise acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad.
To meet the specific entry requirements for admission to doctoral studies in sociology, the applicant must have completed undergraduate studies in sociology comprising at least 90 higher education credits, as well as 60 credits at the advanced (Master’s) level in sociology, or have completed other education of equivalent scope and depth.
A good knowledge of quantitative methods is a requirement for this position. Since the research will be conducted in an international research environment, a good knowledge of English in speech and writing is essential. You will work closely with and be part of a research group that focuses on developing Swedish survey questions, so good knowledge of Swedish is considered an advantage.
About the position
Employment as a doctoral student is given for the time deemed necessary for the completion of the doctoral studies in the normal period of study, which corresponds to a full-time doctoral education for four years. While in the position, students should primarily devote themselves to their own doctoral education. To a limited extent, training and administrative work corresponding to a maximum of twenty per cent of full working hours may occur. As a result, the period of employment can be extended to a maximum of five years. The salary placement is made according to the established salary ladder for doctoral employment.

About the Department
The Department of Sociology offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral education in both sociology and library and information science. The department also contributes to several interdisciplinary programmes in collaboration with other departments at the university. It is home to DIGSUM, the Centre for Digital Social Research.
The department currently has approximately 65 employees, including 14 PhD students. Research is conducted in areas such as Sociology of work, Digital Sociology, Family Sociology, Criminology, Sociology of science, knowledge and information, Racism, nationalism, ethnicity and migration, Social policy and welfare research, and Sociology of education. This research is largely externally funded and is carried out both in larger research groups and by individual researchers.
