Teaching Assistants within research

Umeå School of Architecture is hiring a Teaching Assistant for the spring semester of 2025. The position is part-time and temporary, starting in February. The application deadline is 8 January 2025.

Job description

This position delas with visual storytelling - how we together with images and words can describe the life of juxtaposed urban environments. The project that you will be a part of deals with the interpretation of complex urban environments and the spatial responses created by migrant communities over time.

As a teaching assistant, your responsibilities will include producing and editing photographs, sketches and texts, but you will also be part of planning and organising smaller workshops within the UmArts community. After the workshops you will be a part of postproduction of the finalized material.

The main activities are:

  • Participate in critical discussions on the collected material and how it can be edited.
  • Produce sketches and texts based on photographs
  • Assist in compiling the base material for the UmArts workshop.
  • Assist in producing mock-ups and finalized postcards
  • Assist in planning and setting up a small exhibition.

Other tasks and duties may be assigned.

 

Qualifications

To be eligible for the position you must be enrolled as an architecture student at Umeå university and have completed at least 180 ECTS credits in the field.

You should have previous experience in sketching, digital editing, and handling complex textual and graphical information. Given the nature of the role, you have a high standard of English and the ability to engage in group discussions. Proficiency in Photoshop is also required.

It is considered an advantage if you have previous experience in curating an exhibition, working with AutoCAD and InDesign, or possessing knowledge of photography theory.

As a person, it is important that you are flexible, clear in your communication, and pedagogical. You will also work semi-autonomously in the sense that you take responsibility for your own tasks.

 

Terms of Employment

The position will be 10 % of full-time for 5 months, starting on 3rd February, or as agreed.

The main fixed events will be the preparation and participation in an interdisciplinary workshop in April and postproduction work in June. Other meetings and internal workshops will be agreed upon within the working group.

You will also be able to provide information about your skills and experiences linked to the advertised position. The selection of applicants is made based on the applicant's knowledge, experience, abilities and merits. Submitted samples will also be taken into consideration.
