Umeå University, Faculty Office of Medicine

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

The department of Molecular Biology seeking for a full-time, fixed-term Postdoc position for two years  from 1 April 2025 or as agreed. Application deadline is 6 December 2024.The department provides a vibrant interfaculty research environment and there is access to a wide range of state-of-the-art imaging, metabolomics, genomics and screening facilities.

Description of the project

The project will be carried out under the leadership of Dr. Francesca Aguilo. The research group studies how RNA-mediated mechanisms contribute to gene expression and disease mechanisms. Specifically, we want to understand the role of snoRNAs in controlling triple-negative breast cancer, the most aggressive subtype of the disease.

Work responsibilities

The applicant will combine cell and molecular biology state-of-the-art techniques such as RNA-seq, single-cell RNA-seq, CLIP-seq and other epitranscriptomic analyzes. Human patient samples and several TNBC cell lines will be used in this study.

Eligibility

A person who has been awarded a doctorate or a foreign qualification deemed to be the equivalent of a doctorate in Molecular or Cell Biology is eligible for appointment as postdoctoral researcher. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time at which the appointment decision is made.

To be appointed under the postdoctoral agreement, priority should be given to candidates who completed their doctoral degree, according to what is stipulated in the paragraph above, no later than three years prior. If there are special reasons, candidates who completed their doctoral degree prior to that may also be eligible.

Qualifications

The candidate should have gained experience in RNA-based mechanisms, specifically on snoRNA biology, and be proficient in omics methodologies and CRISPR/Cas9 techniques. Practical expertise in cell culture is a requisite, along with a foundational understanding of epitranscriptomics. Additionally, the candidate should have solid experience in laboratory work, method development, and various biochemical analysis techniques. We seek someone capable of tackling challenging tasks, solving problems, and achieving objectives while working closely and communicating effectively with other researchers.

Candidates must be fluent in spoken and written English and highly motivated.

Application

The application must include:

·         A brief description of your research interests and a statement describing why you are interested in the position.
