Umeå University, Faculty Office of Medicine

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

The Department of Odontology at Umeå University consists of approximately 70 employees and offers education in dental hygiene, dentistry, and dental technology programs, as well as conducting odontological research.

We are now looking for a Project Assistant in Infection Biology.

About the Research Project

Our translational research combines basic and clinical research in infection biology to tailor diagnostics and treatment of dental caries to individual needs. We map genetic and molecular predictors and mechanisms for different causal types of caries based on immunity, microbiota, and the exposome, and the significance of oral health for general health and age-related diseases. The project thus includes molecular biological, translational, and clinical parts and work in an interdisciplinary environment. Here you can read more about our research.

Work Tasks

We are looking for a project assistant who can work experimentally with microbial and human DNA sequencing at the level of whole genomes and metagenomes, and bioinformatics; with large-scale logistics and management of clinical sample collections in the form of genotyping and analyses of various markers; and with analyses of disease mechanisms.

Qualifications

  • Basic education in molecular biology and experience in logistics and management of large-scale clinical sample collections, as well as subsequent work with genotyping and biomarker analysis.
  • Experience working with whole genomes or metagenomes and R statistics for bioinformatics is important.
  • Experience in mechanistic studies, models (e.g., cell and animal models), and analysis methods is also important.

Applicants must be able to communicate fluently in English, both orally and in writing. Applicants must have the ability and interest to work in interdisciplinary environments and with various types of methods. Great emphasis will be placed on good references and suitability.
