We seek an Associate Professor in financial mathematics for a permanent post. Applicants are expected to strengthen our education and research. The deadline for applications is November 29th, 2024.

Background

The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics conducts research in computational mathematics, discrete mathematics, mathematical modelling and analysis, financial mathematics, as well as mathematical statistics. Our teaching activities encompass all levels and include mathematics, mathematical statistics and computational science. We are responsible for a five-year engineering program in Industrial Engineering and Management, bachelor program in mathematics and master programs in mathematics and mathematical statistics. We also run, in collaboration with neighboring departments, two cross-disciplinary research environments, Icelab (www.icelab.se) and UMIT Research Lab (www.org.umu.se/umit). With this recruitment, we aim to reinforce our teaching and research in financial mathematics.

Duties

The duties entail teaching and pedagogical development work in mathematics at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with a particular focus on financial mathematics and financial risk management and related subject areas. Additionally, the duties encompass research in mathematics, particularly financial mathematics. The Associate Professor will cultivate productive collaborations in research and teaching. Furthermore, there are administrative responsibilities and teaching at other levels. Supervision of master's theses, doctoral students, and postdocs may be included in the duties.   

Eligibility requirements

According to Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance, a person shall be qualified for appointment as Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor if he or she within an area has demonstrated educational expertise and holds a doctorate or has attained equivalent academic competence or other professional skills relevant with regard to the subject area of the appointment.

The subject of the doctoral degree should be mathematics or equivalent. A planned research focus on financial mathematics in a broad sense is a mandatory requirement. Ability to teach in English is a prerequisite for the position.

Assessment criteria and their weight

The assessment criteria for appointment as a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor shall be the degree of the expertise required as a qualification for employment.

The assessment basis for the appointment shall, in the first place, be the degree of pedagogical and scientific expertise. Teaching expertise shall be weighted at 60% and research expertise at 40%. In addition, other skills relevant to the subject matter of the post and the tasks to be included in the post shall be taken into account.

Scientific expertise

Scientific expertise shall be demonstrated through independent scientific productivity. The criteria for assessment are:

  • breadth and depth of research – quality and scope
  • originality of research
  • productivity
  • contributions to the international research community
  • assignments within the research community
  • the ability to competitively obtain external research funding
  • collaboration with the surrounding society

Demonstrated good research collaboration skills are highly meritorious.

Experience in supervision of PhD students is meritorious.

The research plan will be given high importance.

Pedagogical expertise

The pedagogical expertise for employment as associate professor should be demonstrated by documented experience of teaching with scientific foundation at university level. The criteria for evaluation are:

  • an ability to plan, implement and evaluate teaching and an ability to supervise and examine students at every level of education
  • an ability to vary teaching methods and examination formats in relation to anticipated study results and the nature of the subject
  • experience of collaboration with the surrounding society in planning and implementation of education
  • participation in the development of learning environments, teaching aids and study resources
  • a reflective approach to student learning and one’s own role as a teacher

Pedagogical expertise can be attained through education in university pedagogy, other education of relevance for teaching at a university level or documented and proven experience teaching at the university level.   

Demonstrated good collaborative teaching skills are highly meritorious.

Experience in teaching financial mathematics is highly meritorious.

Experience of supervising degree projects is meritorious.

Experience of pedagogical development work in mathematics is meritorious.

Further qualifications

A general basis for assessment for all teaching categories is both good cooperative skills and the expertise and suitability in general required to complete the work duties satisfactorily.
