This Staff Scientist position will be based at Umeå Marine Sciences Centre (UMF) which is a unit within Umeå University and is located in Norrbyn just 40 km south of Umeå. UMF’s strategic remit focuses on research, environmental monitoring and public engagement. Particularly relevant to this position, UMF has expertise developed through collection of a unique time series of marine biotic and environmental change over the last 30 years. Job description and working tasks
We are seeking an outstanding candidate who will have a primary role of answering research questions related to climate change and marine ecosystem structure using time series data. The candidate will have responsibility over the support of temporal marine ecosystem change research at UMF. Further, a key role of this position will be dissemination of research in the scientific peer-reviewed literature. 

UMF is a research nexus attracting international researchers, thus the successful candidate will perform a key function in dialogues with visiting groups and UMF colleagues promoting collaboration in the context of environmental grand challenges. The successful candidate will also be a member of the UMF research grouping which develops research strategy relevant to our organisation. 

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • PhD in marine/aquatic systems or equivalent with a focus on analysing or modelling biotic and / or biogeochemical time series
  • Track record of peer-reviewed publications as lead / senior author
  • The ability to work and plan independently 
  • Fluent in English (spoken and written) with the ability to communicate using scientific and technical terminology
  • Collaborative approach to research and publication

Meriting Criteria

  • Experience analysing time series in the context of climate and environmental change
  • Experience modelling marine ecosystems 
  • Track record of research grant income
  • Use of industry standard analysis platforms/languages (e.g. C++, Python, MATLAB or R)
  • Interest in Arctic, sub-Arctic and/or extreme environments
  • Post-doctoral experience

Terms and conditions
This is a full-time position and a probationary period may apply. Expected start date for position will be 2024-06-01 or according to agreement.
