At the Department of Radiation Sciences, we research and teach in the fields of radio physics and medical engineering, oncology, and diagnostic radiology. We have internationally recognised research environments where the breadth of subject areas enables innovation and collaboration across borders. Most of our researchers and teachers work clinically in our premises at NUS - at the centre of our organisation.

We welcome applications for a Doctoral position in cancer epidemiology at the Department of Radiation Sciences. The employment period is four years and is full-time, starting early spring 2024 or by agreement.

Students admitted to third-cycle education are included in the faculty-wide third-cycle programme at the Faculty of Medicine. The programme comprises 25 credits and is offered in two study rates: 25 credits over 8 semesters (4 years in total) o over 12 semesters (6 years in total), with program start every autumn and spring semester. Description of the project and tasks

The project aims to investigate biomarkers in blood samples to better understand the link between overweight and obesity and the development of colorectal cancer. The studies are based primarily on population-based cohorts in northern Sweden.

The employment aims at a doctoral degree and the doctoral student's main task is research training, which includes both participation in research projects and research training courses.

The tasks will mainly consist of planning and conducting advanced statistical analyses, visualisation and interpretation of results and publication of studies in scientific journals, including writing, and revising manuscripts. Communication of results at national and international conferences as well as in popular science features is part of the work. The doctoral student is expected to participate actively in group meetings, journal clubs, seminar series and other scientific activities. The degree of independence is expected to increase during the PhD period and there may be room for development of the student´s own research ideas, teaching, and other career-development activities.

Admission requirements

To be admitted to a third-cycle programme, the applicant must have basic eligibility, specific eligibility and be assessed as having the ability required to complete the program.

Basic qualification

Basic qualification requires a degree at second-cycle level, fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (credits), of which at least 60 credits are at second-cycle level, or who have acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country (HF chapter 7, section 39).

Specific qualification

To be admitted to a third-cycle program, the applicant must have the necessary knowledge from higher education or equivalent education and/or professional experience that is assessed in relation to the third-cycle educational subject area, as well as the necessary language skills in English. Both written and verbal skills are required. In order for these skills to be assessed, potential doctoral students present their research plan in English to an assessment group appointed by the head of the department.

Other qualifications

Candidates may have different educational backgrounds, such as epidemiology, statistics, medicine, or biomedicine.

Courses in epidemiological methods and statistics or equivalent at advanced level are a requirement for the position. Experience of analysing data in R, STATA or equivalent is particularly advantageous, as is experience of analysing large data sets. Knowledge and experience in biomedicine and cancer is meritorious. We are looking for a person who is curious and highly motivated, who is meticulous in their work and who has good co-operation and communication skills. A high emphasis will be placed on personal qualities.
