Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. We are announcing a Senior Research Engineer position in soil acoustics in a project focused on using soil sounds to infer environmental processes. The full-time position is limited to a duration of 11 months. The deadline for applications is 1 December, 2023 and the position is expected to start 1 Jan 2024 or according to agreement.

Project description
Can sensitive microphones detect biological processes ongoing at depth in soils? We think so and have initiated this project that aims to develop a sound-based monitoring system that can be used to study belowground processes. We are now searching for someone willing to join our team and help us construct acoustic sensors and evaluate their performance in a context of soil ecology.

Qualifications
We are searching for a person with a PhD in Biology or equivalent and with experiences of acoustic sensors designed to record sound and/or vibrations of soil fauna. Experience of handling acoustic data using software such as Raven pro or Python code are considered a strong merit.

How to apply
The application should contain the following, written in English (preferably) or Swedish:

A personal cover letter including a summary of previous research experience. CV with academic qualifications and a description of the main research focus.

  • A certified copy of doctoral degree certificate.
  • A list of publications, with the three most relevant marked in red
