Description
Curiosum is a science center at Umeå University with the goal of inspiring young people to science and technology. The facility serves as an educational meeting place for children, youth, students, teachers, and researchers. It is also a destination for the general public and an environment for research, development, and innovation. Curiosum is located at Arts Campus at Umeå University. Curiosum is part of Wisdome, a national initiative focused on scientific visualization with the aim of generating interest in science and technology through immersive environments. Curiosum's dome theater is a key venue for spectacular performances, including interactive shows and pre-produced film productions, covering various scientific themes.
Curiosum also features experimentation labs for chemistry, technology, etc, interactive exhibition environments, as well as workshops and makerspaces for digital manufacturing using various methods and materials. The operation involves approximately 16 people and is led by a director. The steering group consists of representatives from Umeå University, Umeå Municipality, and the business sector.
We are currently seeking a research engineer to take responsibility for the operation of Curiosum's technical environment, including the dome theater, visualization technology and screens and computers in exhibition environments. The position is a permanent full-time position starting on February 1, 2024, or as agreed upon.
Work tasks
Your work will primarily involve the operation and maintenance of Curiosum's technical environments, such as the dome theater, visualization technology, exhibition environments, etc. Your main task is to oversee the technology and software in and around the dome theater, managing daily operations, installing new technology, and proposing various technical solutions. Technical support and assistance are also part of this role. You are generally responsible for the facility's media and A/V technology, including technical installation and operation of image and sound, media, digital information signs, and immersive digital exhibition environments.
You will be part of a technical group that collectively contributes development proposals to ensure that Curiosum remains at the forefront of technological development as a science center and experiential venue. Through the Wisdome network you collaborate with expertise in dome technology and immersive environments. Together with colleagues at the university's IT department, you will contribute to the operation, installation, maintenance, and development of systems, networks, and hardware in network and server environments according to university requirements, such as data security. You will also participate in specifying requirements in the design of documents for procurement.
