Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.
The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The department of Statistics at Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics (USBE), in collaboration with Centre for Demographic and Ageing Research (CEDAR) is looking for a PhD student in Statistics who can perform high quality statistical research. Apply November 13, 2023 at the latest.
We are seeking a PhD student within the project “Studies of heterogeneous effects of critical life course events using machine learning” led by Anna Baranowska-Rataj (CEDAR) and Xavier de Luna (Statistics). The general purpose of the project is to develop machine learning methods to study heterogeneous causal effects of critical life course events for processes that are relevant for population studies. The candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary research group within two environments (CEDAR and USBE).
CEDAR is an interdisciplinary center bringing together researchers interested in topics such as health inequalities, family dynamics, intergenerational relations and ageing, and developing new statistical methods implemented in the field of population studies. CEDAR hosts large-scale longitudinal register databases which allow examining the consequences of major life events, such as job losses, health shocks, or transitions to poverty. The PhD student project will be supervised by Prof. Anna Baranowska-Rataj (main supervisor), who is PI of the project “The effects of unemployment on health of family members (HEALFAM)” funded by the European Research Council, and by Prof. Xavier de Luna (co-supervisor) chair of the Stat4Reg Lab focusing on developing causal machine learning methods to solve scientific questions based on large-scale databases.
The PhD position is fully funded for the duration of four years. PhD students may be appointed to teaching and/or consulting duties up to 20 % of their time, thereby prolonging the duration of the program to guarantee four years of graduate studies. For more information about doctoral studies: https://www.aurora.umu.se/en/education-and-research/support-for-doctoral-studies/
The starting date for the position is February 1, 2024 or upon agreement.
Requirements and qualifications
Applicants should have a degree awarded at the advanced level with a major in Statistics (or equivalent qualifications). Moreover, the student must have satisfactorily undertaken courses in Mathematics equivalent to at least 30 ECTS credits.
The assessments of the applicants are based on their qualifications and their ability to benefit from the doctoral-level education they will receive. Experience in the R programming language (or alike) and in the use of machine learning methods is a merit for the position.

More about CEDAR
CEDAR contributes to research in the areas of population studies and ageing by building population databases of the highest possible quality and make these available for researchers. CEDAR provides also researchers with a creative and vigorous interdisciplinary environment, bringing together experts from a variety of backgrounds – i.e. cultural geography, demography, demographic history, economics, medicine, sociology and statistics.
CEDAR is internationally connected through membership in the International Consortium of Lifecourse Research Centers coordinated by the LIVES Centre in Switzerland. The consortium includes over a dozen of excellent centers that focus on topics related to vulnerability and resilience across lifecourse, generations and historical time as well as geographic contexts. Collaborations within the consortium support initiatives such as winter schools for doctoral students, international visits of guest researchers as well as joint workshops and conferences. CEDAR is also a member of Population Europe, the network of Europe’s leading research centers in the field of policy-relevant population studies.
